Text Chapter 628 Overwhelming!

Previous page        Return to Catalog        Next page

The Termez Corridor is one of the four most important corridors in Afghanistan.  The remaining three corridors are Herat Corridor, Wakhan Corridor and Nimroz.  These mountain corridors connect Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, India and China.

Afghanistan is a purely landlocked mountainous country, and corridors mean flatness, oases and food.  Except for the Wakhan Corridor, which is located entirely on the Congling (Pamir) Plateau, the other three corridors are all hilly terrain.  Compared with the large mountains in the center and north, this is the area with the best traffic conditions in Afghanistan.  It is conceivable that if China controls the four corridors, not only will Dushanbe be flanked, but the army can also set off from Afghanistan and directly penetrate into Uzbekistan or Turkmenistan, or even open a channel to Persia, threatening the security of the Caucasus!

Even if the traffic capacity of all channels is poor, Moscow does not dare to gamble.  This is also the main reason why Soviet generals such as Tukhachevsky insisted that Afghanistan could not fall to China even if the recovery of national strength was slow.  In the final analysis, they were too worried about China's penetration into the Persian Gulf region. Having already lost Vladivostok, losing Afghanistan and Persia would mean that most of the Soviet Union's external communication channels were cut off, and its dream of gaining access to the Pacific and Indian Oceans was aborted.

Now, two of these four corridors are controlled by the Soviet army. Even Yegorov said that victory is not far away.  In order to buy time to win Afghanistan, Moscow continued to send more troops to Kazakhstan while secretly negotiating peace talks with China to ease the confrontation in Kazakhstan.

Belkin stood on the hillside with his company, his face a little depressed.  The stalemate in the Charikar Valley has left Moscow unhappy.  Many officers were demoted, and he, the regimental commander, was also demoted to company commander and was transferred here to protect the only road from Kunduz to Hulum in the west.  Everyone in the Soviet army knows that it is very dangerous for an officer to be demoted. People from the GPU have come to investigate whether he has neglected his duty more than once. If it were not for the fact that the officers behind him had also suffered a bloody blow in the Hindu Kush, they would have said  Maybe they have been sent to Siberia to work as "lumberjacks".

Lumberjack This is a profession that has changed the color of the whole Soviet Union in recent years!  But in fact, he was full of bitterness when talking about this battle.  The first is that the troops are seriously underprepared.  When we first moved south from Dushanbe, there were only two 75mm field guns in the regiment.  Looking at the enemies again, they all have flexible and convenient mortars, and machine guns are even assigned to each platoon!  As long as the plane on your side takes to the sky, it is basically impossible to land on its own.  Coupled with the impregnable natural mountains surrounding Kabul, it is simply a nightmare for infantry.

Despite all the reasons, he still blamed himself after coming out of the civil war.  I feel that I have failed to fulfill my duty as a communist warrior and it would be a shame to be defeated by the corrupt army of capital.

"Comrade Company Commander." The soldier's shout pulled him out of four months of memories, and he turned to look at the rolling dust in the direction of Hulem.

    Reinforcements have arrived!

"Be careful of enemy aircraft." After Belkin arranged the air defense mission, he led the soldiers towards the reinforcements.

The reinforcements came from the 3rd Division of the Ural Army.  This is a heroic unit that emerged from the civil war. It participated in the pursuit of Kolchak's troops and launched the final encirclement and annihilation battle.  In terms of equipment, it is also the best unit east of the Urals, equipped with more than 100 trucks and more than 3,000 horses, as well as 24 122 mm heavy artillery and a large number of machine guns. If it were not for the railway problem that prevented the tanks from moving south quickly, this unit would still be able to move south quickly.  will be stronger.

Division political commissar Kuzmin led the truck regiment and cavalry regiment.  He participated in many battles under Frunze and became political commissar of the 3rd Ural Division last year because he was politically qualified.  "Bergin, Turkestan Front, welcomes comrade political commissar."

"Comrade Belkin, you have worked hard." Kuzmin is an Uzbek and does not have the aggressive nature of Slavs.  On the contrary, his easy-going temperament is very suitable for political work.  He did not immediately ask about the war, but rather chatted about domestic matters, which impressed Belkin, who had suffered consecutive defeats.

The trucks and the neatly lined up Cossack cavalry made the soldiers of the Turkestan Military District very envious. After all, they were the main force from the region close to Europe. Compared with these other no-name border guards, their equipment and quality were much higher.  The only thing that makes everyone uncomfortable is that.  The Soviet army still does not have formal military ranks, so everyone calls for comrades to come and comrades to go.

Comrade Turkestan warmly welcomed the arrival of the reinforcements, which slowed down the advance of the troops. Along the way, many Afghan guerrilla soldiers loyal to Amanullah came around to say hello. They were also very happy to see the well-equipped main force of the Soviet army. Many of them even shot in the air and shouted.  To counterattack Kunduz.  But unlike Kuzmin, Belkin and the soldiers became a lot more nervous after entering the war zone. The Ural Army officers were surprised by their actions of staring at the sky from time to time. Many people even sneered at them, weren't they just a few planes?  Can you stop the highly motivated proletarian warriors?

Belkin didn¡¯t know the answer. He was afraid of being laughed at and said he was timid, so he could only smile secretly and hope for a peaceful journey.  ButJust hoping for peace, something was wrong. The convoy had only walked a few kilometers when two Falcons patrolling together found the target and roared towards the convoy.

"Be careful, spread out! Spread out."

Belkin shouted loudly to remind everyone to disperse, and the soldiers of the 3rd Ural Division immediately jumped out of the vehicle, but most of them had no experience in dealing with aircraft, and many even shot into the air with rifles.  Kuz was so nervous that he asked the soldiers to take out the newly equipped DP light machine gun and put it on the truck. The round bullet disc was the best feature to identify it.

This kind of machine gun has not yet been officially equipped with the Soviet army. The 3rd Division was authorized to bring some for experiments because it wanted to support Afghanistan.  Hoo hoo ho The DP light machine gun spit out several obvious lines of fire into the sky, but the 7.62mm bullets were not very effective against metal aircraft, so the diving momentum of the two Falcons was not curbed.  On the contrary, the two 12.7mm machine guns equipped by the Falcon were very powerful. Several unprotected trucks started to catch fire after being hit by bullets, and the cavalry horses were frightened and ran around.

    "Shoot, focus, shoot them down!"

    "Hurry up, it's back again."

The two Falcons, like falcons whose eyes were reddened by their prey, swooped down and fired at the truck convoy.  In just a few minutes, everyone on the ground was turned upside down, and Soviet soldiers were everywhere like headless flies.  Faced with such an attack, the Soviet army, which lacked air defense weapons and training, complained endlessly. Fortunately, the Falcon fighter jets were short of ammunition. After a few minutes of strafing, they made a large circle and flew north over Kuzmin's head.

"Damn it, where's our plane!" Within just a few minutes.  More than a dozen soldiers were killed by machine guns before they even saw the enemy, and several trucks were lost. The result made Kuzmin, a good-tempered man, turn blue.  Belkin smiled bitterly and shook his head, if only he had a plane here.  How could he be dragged here for four full months?  Said: "Comrade Political Commissar, this place is too empty. We should leave here. They will definitely bring more planes when they go back."

Kuzmin nodded.  The troops were immediately regrouped and ordered to abandon the damaged trucks and move forward faster.  Perhaps the impression of being attacked by a plane just now was too deep. After giving the order, he couldn't help but look to the sky. Even with this glance, he could never take his eyes back!

    "what is that"

Belkin was looking at the new DP machine gun in the hands of his comrades. He raised his head when he heard the question, but his expression suddenly changed when he saw it clearly!  I saw a large fleet of shining silver aircraft suddenly jumping out from the top of the mountain in the distance, each one rushing towards here.  "The plane is a big Chinese bomber! Oh my God, there are too many! Spread out. Spread out quickly!"

Two Falcons will make the self-proclaimed elite 3rd Division forward troops suffer a lot, not to mention the bomber group that is pressing down like a hill!  On the ground, the Soviet troops once again spread out looking for bunkers. The group of bombers that suddenly jumped out from the mountain for the purpose of raid also began to spread out. A small formation of four aircraft roared down at a speed of 250 kilometers per hour.

    "Open the magazine."

After the captain gave the order, the bombardier quickly opened the bomb bay door.  The sudden influx of air made the plane extremely difficult to control.  Everyone felt like they were sitting in a truck that lost control and rushed down from the mountain, holding on to everything that could stabilize the body with their hands.  Fortunately, this turbulence was short-lived, and the captain quickly issued the order to drop the bomb.

A total of 72 experimental bombs from the four bombers quickly detached from their pylons. When the bombardiers were busy closing the hatches, Belkin and other Soviet soldiers on the ground saw a scene they would never forget.  I saw four planes passing by in the sky.  Then nearly a hundred egg-like black spots emerged from the belly of the aircraft.  The Soviet soldiers who were targeted ran wildly in the hope of escaping the range of the bombs, and the soldiers who escaped farther away breathed a sigh of relief.

Belkin was also very nervous when he saw the dense small bombs. The only thing he could be thankful for was that the terrain here and the experience of the two previous fighter jets meant that the soldiers were relatively scattered and the truck regiment had also dispersed. It should not cause too much damage.  damage.  But just when he thought there wouldn't be much damage, the small bomb whizzing down suddenly appeared strange!

Under Belgin¡¯s surprised gaze, the tails of these small bombs suddenly opened up with small parachutes as white as blooming flowers!  This is Before everyone could figure out what it was, the bomb that suddenly slowed down exploded in the air 30 meters above our heads, and then we saw a blurry thing flying out from the center of the explosion, a sharp  The sound of piercing screams filled the entire sky.

"Poof" A Soviet soldier who was hundreds of meters away from the explosion point and was bending down to avoid the explosion heard a soft sound before he could react, and then there was severe pain in his chest. He lowered his head and looked down.  I found that something had drilled a big hole in my lungs!  Then came the second, third Dozens of soldiers were penetrated by the flying objects and fell down inexplicably.

Belkin was stunned and couldn¡¯t understand why his comrades who were hiding far away would fall down like leeks inexplicably. When heAfter hiding in the bunker 300 meters away from the explosion point, there were two pop-pop sounds, and then I realized what I had encountered.

Two black, somewhat deformed steel balls penetrated deeply into the soil next to him. The punctures were deeper than a finger and made him turn pale!  "It's steel balls! Spread out" Belkin stood up and shouted in a hurry, but by this time it was already too late.

After the first team successfully dropped the bomb, the fleet behind them quickly followed up and dropped a wave of bombs continuously.  The bomb was set to detonate at a height of 30 meters. At the moment when the small parachute opened, the head of the bomb and the internal explosive column detonated at the same time, tearing apart the outer shell. 108 solid steel balls weighing 200 grams were scattered like flying balls under the action of explosion and falling acceleration.  Raindrops poured down from the heads of the Soviet troops!

The steel balls that were squeezed or deformed by the explosion collided with each other and screamed, drawing irregular trajectories and hitting the ground, penetrating the body.  Digging into rocks and punching through car steel.  One submunition is 108 steel balls. A squadron of Thunderbolt bombers can carry 72 submunitions, a total of 7776 random steel balls!  When 7,776 steel balls were squeezed by the shock wave and whizzed down, there was only one word to describe it.

    It¡¯s overwhelming!

A running soldier was hit in the thigh by a steel ball, and his leg was broken in two and exposed.  The comrades tried to drag the injured man behind a rock, but another steel ball passed directly through his head.  He fell straight on his back with half of his head splattered.  Several trucks were smashed into sieves by steel balls, and none of the machine gunners and drivers on them were spared.

The worst thing is the cavalry regiment!

No matter how fast a war horse is, it cannot compare with a bomber.  To deal with the cavalry, there were three squadrons of 12 Thunderbirds chasing after them and throwing bombs at the places with the most people.  The steel balls released after the explosion in the air were not something that the war horses could withstand. They were hit by the steel rain in batches, leaving their masters screaming and falling.

32 Thunder Gods.  576 submunitions, 62,208 steel balls!

When the last one finished dropping its bomb and roared back, the wilderness was covered by the dust stirred up by the steel balls. There were corpses and Soviet soldiers twisting their bodies and screaming in pain, trucks on fire and wailing horses everywhere.  It made Belkin feel like he was in Shura Hell, his whole body was cold and cold.

"This didn't explode." A soldier jumped out of the bunker, picked up a sub-munition bomb that didn't explode, and raised it high.  Perhaps he thought it would be a great achievement and would help the country develop the same bomb, but he failed to notice the soft ticking sound in the bomb.  Belkin and the surviving soldiers quickly surrounded him.  Wanting to see what kind of demon this was, the bomb suddenly exploded in the soldier's hand.

The last thing Belkin felt was severe pain in his chest.

The results of this pre-retreat bombing campaign were learned by Moscow intelligence agents three months later. A mere 576 submunitions killed 411 Soviet soldiers and injured 1,322 others to varying degrees.  221 horses were lost, 79 trucks were damaged, and 29 officers including the political commissar of the 3rd Ural Division Kuzmin were killed. The two forward regiments of the 3rd Ural Division were almost completely wiped out!

Due to the serious losses and fear of causing panic on the front lines, Moscow ordered a blockade of the news.  The direct consequence of this bombing was Stalin's serious dissatisfaction with the Soviet Air Force.  Several generals were dismissed one after another and ordered to build better and more new aircraft to defend the sky.

On September 3, 1927, as a tribute to the 15th Soviet Congress, Yegorov ordered a general attack on Kabul and Kunduz.  37,000 Soviet troops and thousands of Afghan rebels, supported by artillery fire, bombed the two cities indiscriminately. However, when the troops entered the city, they found that the National Defense Forces and the Afghan troops had long been deserted.

The Soviet soldiers, who were red-eyed with bloodshed, massacred and looted wildly in the two cities, causing thousands of deaths in the two places. It was not until Amanullah returned to Kabul on September 9 that he calmed down a little.

On the day he returned to Kabul, Amanullah, who was supported by the Soviet Union, announced the restoration of the throne and demanded that China and the United Kingdom immediately withdraw from northern Afghanistan and Kandahar.  By September 15, troops loyal to Amanullah and two thousand Soviet troops approached Kandahar. Facing superior opponents, the British army, unwilling to fight, abandoned Kandahar and retreated all the way to India.

Knowing that he could only rely on the Soviet Union, Amanullah had no retreat. He not only formed a secret alliance with the Soviet Union and agreed to allow Soviet troops to be stationed in Kabul and Herat for a long time, but also established a counter-revolutionary committee based on the Soviet model to suppress domestic opposition with the support of the Soviet army.  Go to war with the tribe.  By mid-1928, tens of thousands of people had been killed by the Afghan Suppression Committee and the Soviet army.

In early October, the 15th National Congress of the Soviet Union ended.  The party traitor, Tronotsky and his lackeys were finally expelled from the Politburo and the Soviet Union.  Stalin, who held sole power, also realized in his excitement that the war could not continue, so China, the Soviet Union and Britain soon reached the "Afghanistan Ceasefire Agreement" in Dushanbe, and all three parties agreed to an immediate ceasefire in accordance with the current line of actual control.  The day after the agreement was reached, Nanjing declared the four northern provinces of Afghanistan to be Soviet no-fly zones, prohibiting all aircraft from flying over the four provinces.??If discovered, it will be shot down directly without notification.

Although the war in Afghanistan lasted only a short time, its impact was extremely significant.  In just four months, the National Defense Forces sacrificed a total of 537 people and injured more than 1,100 people, including 122 seriously injured. Military expenditures consumed 23 million yuan.  The Soviet army suffered a total of 8,700 casualties, hundreds of trucks and tanks, 57 aircraft, and economic expenditures as high as 100 million rubles.  In the subsequent guerrilla war in Afghanistan, in order to stabilize the Amanullah government, the Soviet army had to station in Afghanistan for a long time. At its peak, the number of troops once reached 70,000, once again consuming the already weak national power.

But at this time, Stalin believed that he was the victorious party, so Pravda declared itself the winner of the war in Afghanistan on the day of the armistice, vowing that it had cut off China's access to Persia and defeated the imperialist conspiracy.  Although Nanjing seemed to be fighting a useless war, its deeper goal of diverting trouble to the south had already taken shape.  Of course, the happiest person was the United Kingdom. Although Afghanistan was temporarily controlled by the Soviet Union, Sino-Soviet relations also deteriorated further. Both sides began to strengthen their troops stationed in the northwest region, which delayed their efforts to resolve the civil strife in India.  But Whitehall may not have expected that the international situation would suddenly turmoil in a few years, turning this victory into a self-defeating stupidity!

On the day the ceasefire agreement was reached in Afghanistan, all British troops stationed in India were dispatched to suppress both the Muslim League and the Congress Party at the same time, and tens of thousands of people were arrested.

In March 1928, after four years of construction and a total of 46,000 political prisoners and their families working day and night, the Novosibirsk Railway, which was destroyed during the civil war, was finally re-laid to the west bank of the Yenisey River in Krasnoyarsk, and Moscow finally  Having a channel to quickly increase troops to the east has greatly eased the pressure on the eastern border defense.

At the same time, the riots in East India gradually subsided under the attack of 15,000 British and Dutch colonial troops. The guerrillas such as Sukarno, who were unable to succeed, had to temporarily retreat deep into the rainforest to wait for opportunities.  Seeing that the opportunity was lost, Blucher could only quietly return to Japan and take the Japanese-Soviet transport fleet back to Moscow
