Text Chapter 1040 Conquering Seoul (Part 1)

August 8, north of Seoul, in the highlands of Bukhan Mountain.

Beihan Mountain has a maximum altitude of 836 meters. It has mountains, steep rocks, canyons and caves.  Standing on the top of the mountain, you can have a panoramic view of Seoul, which is 20 kilometers away.  But such a place with beautiful scenery and suitable for vacation is now filled with the pungent and choking smell of gunpowder smoke, and the ground surface is filled with charred wooden piles and rocks as if it had been burned by fire.  Between the peaks to the north, two 305mm "roller" heavy mortars fired alternately. The power of the 460kg high-explosive bomb could overturn a small hill.

During the interval of shelling, the charred rocks on the mountainside moved slightly, and a telescope was seen sticking out of the tunnel behind the rock.  The owner of the telescope is Major General Mitsuru Nakajima of the 36th Brigade of the 6th Division of the Japanese Army.  The 6th Division is the main first-class division, but because of its disastrous defeat in Qingdao that year, it has always been looked down upon by other main divisions.  Not only the 6th Division, but also the 5th and 19th Divisions that participated in the Qingdao Battle were looked down upon by their colleagues. Therefore, after being incorporated into the Korean Army, they have been stationed in Daejeon. If it were not for the rapid insertion of Chinese troops, Seoul and  Pyongyang was cut off, and Seishiro Itahan had to transfer the nearest division to Seoul to strengthen defense. The 36th Brigade was probably still basking in the sun in Daejeon.

After finally fighting the main force, Nakajima Mitsuru and the division commander Hisao Tani hoped to avenge their shame. However, when the troops fought against their old rivals, they realized why the Chinese Army was able to win consecutive battles in Central Asia.  The nearby barbed wire fence has been blown to pieces, and the simple deer camp and wooden piles are gone. The trenches in front are also filled with rubble raised by artillery fire and the corpses of Japanese soldiers. The soil is red with blood.

The battle for Beihan Mountain has been going on for a week. In just one week, the Chinese navy and air force dropped thousands of tons of bombs here, and at least 200 heavy artillery bombarded the mountain highlands day and night.  His 36th Brigade was killed by intensive artillery fire before thousands of people even saw many enemies.  "Shell attack. Be careful!" Before Nakajima had time to look into the distance, a thunderous roar fell from the sky.

The vast majority of the Japanese troops were of good quality. When they heard the roar, they immediately fell down and retracted into the bunker, but the 460-kilogram shell still landed on their left.  As soon as a "boom" was heard, half of the hilltop on the left was immediately cut off. Hundreds of Japanese soldiers disappeared. The diffuse smoke and dust enveloped the entire hilltop.  "China Pig, why don't you dare to come to a decisive battle! Where are our cannons?!" Several low-level officers howled.  No one likes to be bombed every day and lacks effective means of counterattack.  Even the highly hierarchical Japanese army could no longer silence the frustrated mouths of lower-level officers and soldiers.

The firing of heavy mortars was like a charge trumpet. A few minutes later, the entire Bukhan Mountain was flooded by artillery fire.  Like a powerful hurricane, it swept across the entire surface, constantly pushing down fortifications and bunkers, and lifting up sand and gravel to fill the trenches.  After finally surviving the terrifying preparations for artillery fire, more than a dozen vehicles looked strange.  Tanks and infantry fighting vehicles with steel shields welded on both sides crawled towards the 36th Brigade's position.  Seeing the dense crowd of foreign faces behind the tank holding submachine guns, Ushijima was so angry that he yelled: "Baga! Damn the Chinese people, unite with the devils. They have completely ruined the glory of Greater East Asia!"

What he saw was the infantry battalion of the Tatar Corps of the Russian People's Liberation Army, composed of more than a dozen uzp26/76 assault guns and uzbt7 infantry fighting vehicles.

? uzp26/76 and uzbt7 are both tanks modified from captured Soviet-made T26 tanks and BT7 fast tanks. The former is similar to the German Type III assault gun.  The latter is an infantry support armored vehicle equipped with a Soviet-made Maxim M1910 heavy machine gun and a DP light machine gun.

Since the war between China and the Soviet Union, only the army and air force have clear records of destruction and capture.  There are more than 20,000 Soviet tanks, 3,000 armored vehicles, and as many as 90,000 artillery pieces of various types.  Of course, so many Soviet-made weapons cannot be recycled directly, so the Equipment Department of the General Staff established a special equipment modification center in Almaty to repair and modify Soviet-style equipment.  Cannons and light weapons can be used directly, but tanks and armored vehicles must be modified due to problems with accessories and standards.  The technicians also racked their brains to fully tap the modification potential of Soviet-made tanks, and finally formed a series.  For example, BT tanks are fast and suitable for conversion into armored personnel carriers and support vehicles. Most of the T26s are replaced with 76mm cannons and converted into hunter-killer tanks similar to the Type III assault gun.  The T34 is a good tank, so after repairs, it will be given to the Allies or sold. A small number of them will be transformed into grizzly assault guns or 152mm self-propelled howitzers.  KV tanks have the worst chassis, but because of their heavy weight, they are all equipped with Soviet B4 203mm howitzers and transformed into heavy self-propelled artillery.

In order to distinguish it from its own equipment, the General Staff Equipment Department also followed international practice to number the Soviet-made weapons in service, and uniformly used the first letter u of the Soviet Union to start with.  Take armor as an example, u is the initial letter of the Soviet Union, t is a tank, z is armor, and p is artillery. For example, uzbt7 is an armored infantry fighting vehicle modified by bt7, and ut34/76 refers to the captured and repaired t34/76. If up34/152  , it is a 152mm self-propelled gun modified from T34. If you add z in the middle, it becomes uzp34/152 is a 152mm assault gun modified from a T34 chassis.

With the efforts of tens of thousands of workers and army technicians, 2,200 BT, 700 T26, 1,200 T34, 200 KV and 100 other tanks have been modified and handed over to the troops and friendly forces for use.  The Russian People's Liberation Army (later referred to as the Russian Army), many units in Vietnam and North Korea have received many U-series armored vehicles, which not only reduces domestic manufacturing pressure, but also enhances their combat capabilities.

For the Japanese army, which lacks armor and anti-tank weapons, the T26 is already a very difficult tank to deal with. Now, in accordance with Central Asian standards, the designer has installed two additional 20 mm thick sides to prevent infantry and urban warfare needs.  Shields are more difficult to deal with.  "Stop them!" Seeing the crooked handle and the Type 92 heavy machine gun hitting the steel shield, Ushijima Mitsuru's cheeks became paler and he quickly pushed out the hidden 70mm infantry gun and 37mm anti-tank gun.  .  "Boom, boom, boom." The low-velocity grenade of the 70mm infantry gun cannot deal with tanks at all. Even if the 37mm anti-tank gun can penetrate the outer shield, the armor-piercing explosive shell will disintegrate and explode, unable to threaten the main armor of the vehicle body.  .

The Japanese army's tickling attack made the Russian army more confident, and they aimed their artillery at the weak Japanese anti-tank firepower points.

The uzp26/76 is equipped with a Soviet-made F-22usv 76mm cannon. This is a very powerful cannon. After testing by the equipment department, it was found that if domestic high-speed tungsten bombs are used, it can effectively deal with the Type 31 tank.  Therefore, the Russian army's roll call artillery fire was very sharp. Every time it was fired, the artillery shells easily penetrated the civil fortifications and destroyed the targets behind. Even the 82mm mortars of the infantry behind were better than the Japanese artillery.

A dozen modified tanks quickly destroyed the first line of defense, crushing the corpses of Japanese soldiers and continuing to attack.  "Let me carry the Emperor onboard!" A shirtless Japanese soldier saw the tank approaching, his eyes turned red instantly, he ferociously picked up a bundle of cluster grenades and got under the tank.  But after the explosion, the Japanese soldiers who were about to celebrate the destruction of an assault gun discovered that the cluster grenade could not even destroy the side shield.  Although the Russian army is composed of prisoners, its combat experience is not bad. Moreover, these Russian troops are the earliest Soviet veterans. They have fought with China for so long and have very rich combat experience.  After encountering a suicide attack, he immediately asked the infantry support vehicle behind him to come up for protection, and then used several assault guns to blast all the dozen or so Japanese soldiers in this hidden position into pieces.

Except for this hillside, the entire Bukhan Mountain Highlands were shrouded in rumbling artillery fire. In order to open up the last barrier to enter Seoul, Zhuo Fan not only assembled 1,500 artillery pieces of various types today, but also invested 320 modified tanks and combat vehicles.  "Quick! Go and inform General Itahuan that China is launching a full-scale attack!" The heavy rain of artillery shells and the armored tanks all over the mountains and plains caused heavy casualties to the 6th Division. The commander of the division, Hisao Tani, quickly sent someone to notify Itahuan Seishiro.

"Is it a full-scale attack?" In the underground bunker of the Nanshan Fortress in the city, Itankan Seishiro has lost the vigor and elegance he had a while ago. His hair is disheveled and his clothes are stained with dirt. He looks very tired at first sight.  "How many troops were committed?"

"Tani Hisao reported that the Chinese Army has invested at least 1,500 artillery pieces and 300 tanks. Judging from the size of the establishment, it should be between 5 and 6 divisions. The current attack is mainly concentrated on Beihan Mountain, and there are no troops in the east and south.  Signs of enemy contact." Chief of Staff Nishimura lay on the map and marked the fighting situation.

"300 tanks?" Banhuan was startled. How many tanks did the entire Japanese and Korean army have?

"Yes, this time I'm afraid we will all be broken into pieces." Nishimura put down his pen with a wry smile.  After Zhuo Fan quickly penetrated to capture Kaicheng and continued to surround Seoul to the south, he had a premonition that the situation was very bad.  "A telegram came from the base camp. China has defeated the Soviet counterattack and entered the Urals. Chief Tojo asked us to continue to defend Seoul and said he would send more troops, but Okinawa has been occupied by China.  I¡¯m afraid there won¡¯t be any reinforcements.¡±

Banhuan was shocked again. He did not expect that China would reverse Central Asia in just two months. This undoubtedly cast a shadow on his insistence on Seoul.  "There is only one way now, which is to have the troops from Pyongyang and the north withdraw at all costs, and Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province to wait for reinforcements." Nishimura said the last resort.  Domestic support must be forgotten. Now we can only forcefully withdraw the troops in the north, but in this way, many troops will definitely be eaten by the opponent during the retreat.

"Just give the order, and you must defend Seoul." Banhuan nodded, and suddenly thought of Nagata Tetsuzan, who had always opposed the war between China and Japan, and finally died tragically because of it
