"The city wall is broken, and the Western Sichuan Army is about to come in. We have only one way to die. Now, for the sake of everyone's lives, I order everyone to put down their weapons and surrender to the Western Sichuan Army!" Zhang Ming, who had already made up his mind, immediately faced his opponent.  The subordinates said.

"What? Surrender to the Western Sichuan Army?" Many Qing troops looked at each other.  Although they were all very afraid of death, they never thought about surrendering to the Western Sichuan Army at the beginning of the battle!  However, most people still support Zhang Ming's decision.  In comparison, you don¡¯t have to die!  For them, the bullshit theories of loyalty to the emperor and patriotism are useless and far inferior to saving their own lives.

"Zhang Ming, what do you want to do? Do you want to betray the court and the general?" A captain stood up and pointed at Zhang Ming and asked loudly.

"Bang!" A gunshot sounded.  The agent of the Western Sichuan Army who was following Zhang Ming took out his pistol and shot the opponent with one shot.

"Ah!" The Qing troops suddenly became excited.

"Brothers, the Western Sichuan Army has broken the city and will attack soon. If you go against the Western Sichuan Army, there is only one way to die. Put down your weapons and surrender!" Zhang Ming didn't even look at Du Si who fell on the ground.  Mobilize again.

This is the sound of rumble of horse hooves coming from outside the city wall.  The cavalry of the Western Sichuan Army has begun to charge.  The faces of the Qing soldiers turned pale one by one, and the rumble of horse hooves was like an urging voice.

Soon, someone put down their rifles, and then, one after another, Qing troops put down their weapons.  Seeing this, Zhang Ming and the agents of the Western Sichuan Army breathed a sigh of relief.

In less than a minute, a cavalryman from the Western Sichuan Army rushed in from the gap. He was already ready to shoot, but he was surprised to see that all the Qing troops were divided into two columns and stood in the gap.  Next to him, there were no weapons in his hands.

"Brothers, they have surrendered. I am from the Military Intelligence Agency. Everyone, rush inside!" the Military Intelligence agent shouted.

So, those Western Sichuan troops who rushed into Baoji City came to their senses, waved their sabers, and charged into the city.

The Western Sichuan Army entered Baoji City without any resistance. From this moment on, the outcome of the fall of Baoji City was almost certain.

Most of the Qing troops in Baoji City still put up fierce resistance, but in terms of equipment, morale and strength, they were far from able to compete with the Western Sichuan Army.  After the Western Sichuan Army entered the city, the balance of victory began to fall rapidly towards the Western Sichuan Army.

"Sir, it's not good, the Western Sichuan Army is coming, and the brothers can hardly resist it!" A guerrilla general quickly rushed into the general's house.

"How could it be so fast? Are our people so vulnerable?" Hu Weilong said angrily.

"My lord, the Western Sichuan Army has moved its artillery and heavy machine guns into the city, and the brothers can't resist it! My lord, let's break out, shall we?" the guerrilla general suggested.

"Haha! Break out? Where to break out? Baoji City has been surrounded by the Western Sichuan Army. Where should we break out?" Hu Weilong said sadly.

"Boom! Boom!" "Da da da!" The explosion of artillery shells and the roar of heavy machine guns echoed in Baoji City.  The Qing troops in the city were already well prepared. They set up large barricades on the streets, preparing to resist the attacks of the Western Sichuan Army.  However, the Western Sichuan Army's mortars bombarded them fiercely and their heavy machine guns swept across the area. The Qing Army simply could not withstand it.

The street fighting in Baoji City ended in less than three hours.  The Western Sichuan Army had already captured the entire Baoji City.  Most of the 20,000 Qing troops were captured, and only a few were killed.  Hu Weilong, the defender of Baoji City, was also one of them.  After the Western Sichuan Army captured the General's Mansion, Hu Weilong still led his guards to resist stubbornly.  He was highly skilled in martial arts, and several soldiers of the Western Sichuan Army were killed by him one after another, which aroused the anger of the Western Sichuan Army.  The Western Sichuan Army transferred several mortars and shelled the place where Hu Weilong and his subordinates were hiding.  When the bombardment ended, Hu Weilong and his guards were basically killed.  At this point, the entire Baoji fell into the control of the Western Sichuan Army.

"Young Marshal, Chief of Staff! Baoji is already under our control!" Zhao Bowen asked with excitement.  He was very happy to win the first battle.

"How many casualties are there?" Both Wang Yuze and Cai Yun are more concerned about this issue.

"Preliminary statistics show that more than 200 people were killed and more than 200 were seriously injured. The total casualties are less than 500!" Zhao Bowenhui reported.

"So few?" Cai Yun was a little surprised.  It stands to reason that the casualties in street fighting are not small. According to his estimates, to capture Baoji, the Western Sichuan Army would have to pay at least thousands of casualties.

"A guerrilla general of the Qing army was instigated by us, so he led his troops to surrender without resistance, allowing us to rush into Baoji City without paying any casualties. The next battle was relatively simple, and the Qing army had no chance at all.  No fighting spirit. The most important casualties were almost all incurred when attacking the General's Mansion!" Zhao Bowen said.

"So that's it! But it's good, you can win at the minimum cost, why not? Order the troops to clean the battlefield and march to Xi'an tomorrow!" Wang Yuze said with a smile.  Taking Baoji is just the first step.  The most important thing is to march towards Xi'an and eliminate the more than 100,000 Qing troops entrenched there.  Not to mention there are 50,000 Mongolian cavalry there.  This powerful cavalry was once famous throughout Asia and Europe.  However, the current Mongolian cavalry has long lost the brilliance of their ancestors.

The next day, apart from leaving a few soldiers to guard the prisoners and treat the wounded, the Western Sichuan Army once again headed east, along the official road, towards Xi'an.

Xi'an is only 180 kilometers away from Baoji.  At the speed of the cavalry, it can be reached in one day.  However, considering that the large army was marching with too much heavy equipment and baggage, the Western Sichuan Army deliberately slowed down.  When we arrived in Xi'an, it was already noon on June 20th.  Before that, Baoji fell, the 20,000 defenders were wiped out, and news of the death of General Hu Weilong had reached Xi'an.

The office of Zhu Hongzhang, the Northern Army general appointed by the Qing court, was located in the Governor's Mansion of Shaanxi, not the Governor's Mansion of Shaanxi Governor Wei Guangtao.  Although the Admiral's Mansion is far inferior to the Governor's Mansion in terms of layout and architectural conditions, this is where military generals conduct military affairs.

News of the fall of Baoji had been sent to Xi'an on the morning of the 19th.  General Zhu Hongzhang immediately summoned Wei Guangtao, the governor of Shaanxi, Zhu Shijun, the admiral of Shaanxi, Zhao Wenkai, the admiral of Shanxi, and Boyan Namohu, the prince of Horqin, for discussion.

The composition of the Northern Army is mainly composed of 100,000 Shaanxi Green Battalions plus 50,000 Shanxi Green Battalions and 50,000 Mongolian cavalry.  Now, Baoji has lost 20,000 Green Camp troops, Hanzhong still has 50,000 troops, and there are only 130,000 troops left in Xi'an.

"Everyone, the emperor has sent me to take charge of the military affairs in Shaanxi. I hope you can help me. Now, Baoji has fallen and the Western Sichuan Army is coming to Xi'an. How should we respond?" Zhu Hongzhang asked.  As Wujiang, who rose to prominence by suppressing the Taiping Rebellion, Zhu Hongzhang himself was somewhat capable.  However, he has not fought against the Western Sichuan Army for so many years, so Ye Bing is not very clear about the true strength of the Western Sichuan Army. His limited knowledge only comes from some intelligence.

"Sir, didn't we discuss this before? Defend Xi'an. The city of Xi'an is strong and powerful. It will not be easy for the Western Sichuan Army to capture Xi'an with 50,000 people!" Wei Guangtao, the governor of Shaanxi, said.  As the governor of Shaanxi, he had the responsibility to defend his territory. If Shaanxi fell, he would have no other option but to die to apologize.

"Coward! Offense is the best defense. General, I want my troops to come out of the city to fight against the Western Sichuan Army, and let them know how powerful our Mongolian cavalry is!" Prince Boyan Namohu of Horqin said disdainfully.  The Western Sichuan Army only had 50,000 troops, but it actually scared hundreds of thousands of Han troops into fearing to leave the city. These Han people, as my father said, were all cowardly lambs!
