??Mt. Volta, with an altitude of only 549 meters, can only be regarded as a low hill in the area where the Carmen River flows out of the Chinese border.  However, this hill guards the valley area and its strategic location is very important.

After the Ninth Brigade of the Western Sichuan Army was ordered to garrison this hill, all the artillery was sent up the mountainside more than 30 meters high through the rugged mountain road. The artillery positions established there could enable the artillery of the Western Sichuan Army to cover the entire battlefield.  included in the bombardment range.

On the hillside, because the terrain is relatively narrow, the Ninth Brigade only set up two lines of defense.  One is at the foot of the mountain, and the other is more than 20 meters high.  However, if the British and Indian troops attack, they will be hit by fire from two lines of defense at the same time.  This makes the defensive power of the defensive position in Volta Mountain much stronger than that in the river valley area.

Originally, Du Qizheng, the commander of the Ninth Brigade, complained that if the Ninth Brigade was placed here, the British and Indian troops would not dare to attack.  Then the Ninth Brigade won't be able to win any big battles.  But he did not expect that after the failure in attacking the river valley area, the British and Indian troops immediately took the Volta Mountains as their main attack direction, which made him extremely happy.

"Little bastards, cheer me up, the British and Indian troops are about to attack. I'm going to make them bruise their heads in front of our position and let them know how powerful our ninth brigade is!" Du Qizheng shouted  commanded.

The soldiers of the Ninth Brigade were also gearing up, preparing to give the British and Indian troops a head-on attack.  During the battle on the 16th, they met the British Army's 28th Brigade in a narrow road in the river valley.  But in the end, they almost wiped out all the British troops in this brigade, which made the soldiers of the Ninth Brigade very proud and showed their momentum.  In this battle, they became more confident in dealing with more British and Indian troops.

"Boom! Boom!" greeted the bombardment.  A large number of artillery shells hit the 9th Brigade's position.  The British and Indian troops also knew that the Volta Mountains were more difficult to attack than the valley areas, so they prepared more firepower for the charge.

The shells hit the mountain hard, the soil and gravel were blown away, and many trees were knocked upside down.  However, the casualties caused to the soldiers of the Western Sichuan Army were not large.  The fortifications on Mount Volta were very difficult to build. There were rocks underneath the thin soil.  The soldiers of the 9th Brigade, plus the supporting soldiers of the 8th Brigade, used their engineering shovels to dig out trenches that were more than half a man deep, and also dug out artillery-proof holes.  The defenses of these anti-gun caves are much stronger than those in the river valleys. No matter how fierce the artillery fire from the British and Indian troops was, it did not cause any damage.

"All 105mm light howitzers, come back to me. Suppress the enemy's artillery fire!" Just taking a beating without fighting back is not Du Qizheng's style.  Under his order, the artillery of the Western Sichuan Army deployed on the mountainside immediately began shelling.  The artillery of the Western Sichuan Army and the artillery of the British and Indian Army have the same performance.  However, the artillery of the Western Sichuan Army was deployed on the mountain and had a longer range.  Suddenly, a large number of artillery shells fell into the artillery position of the British and Indian troops, causing the British soldiers who were controlling the cannons to fly into the air one by one.  Many cannons that were firing suddenly went silent.

"Boom!" An earth-shattering sound sounded. It turned out that a bunch of artillery shells were hit by the artillery shells of the Western Sichuan Army, causing a violent explosion.  The explosion killed all the British and Indian troops within a few dozen meters of the surrounding area, and several 3-inch cannons were also destroyed.

"Artillery counterattack, counterattack!" the artillery commander of the British and Indian Army cursed angrily.

"Report, our artillery can't reach the opponent's artillery position, and we can't fight back!" A low-level officer reported.

"All artillery, move forward, and must destroy the enemy's artillery!" The artillery commander hesitated for a moment and gave the order.  The artillery of the Western Sichuan Army is deployed on the mountain and has a longer range.  If they want to start an artillery battle with the Western Sichuan Army, they must continue to move forward and close the distance between the two sides.  But this will also put more pressure on their artillery.  However, their artillery number was more than twice that of the Western Sichuan Army. Therefore, the artillery commanders of the British and Indian Army were confident of defeating the artillery of the Western Sichuan Army.

The artillery of the British and Indian troops immediately pushed the cannon forward.  In the process, they were once again severely bombarded by the Western Sichuan Army.  Artillerymen were constantly being killed and cannons were blown up.  But these British soldiers still carried out the commander's orders very well.  If it were the Indian army, I'm afraid it would have collapsed long ago!

"Okay, good job, give me a good beating on those bastards!" Du Qizheng saw from the telescope that one after another the British and Indian army's cannons were blown up by the Western Sichuan Army.  The artillerymen also blasted the Western Sichuan Army into the sky, and they couldn't help but cheer loudly.

However, soon the British artillery also entered the range of the bombardment.  They quickly set up their artillery and began their counterattack.  Both sides openA fierce artillery battle ensued.  Although the Western Sichuan Army had the advantage of this geographical location, the British Army had more artillery, and the fighting was fierce with both sides going back and forth.  Cannons were constantly being destroyed, and even shells were exploding. The losses of the artillery on both sides were rising rapidly.

"Damn it, the British are relying on the fact that they have more artillery than we do, and they want to destroy all our artillery!" Wang Yuze's face looked very ugly.  The artillery of the Western Sichuan Army was less than half that of the British Army.  If this fight continues, the Western Sichuan Army will suffer a great loss.

"Yes! If our artillery is used up, we will have no choice but to be bullied by the British army!" Su Hongguang, commander of the 8th Brigade, also looked a little ugly.  The artillery battalion of their 8th Brigade is also on Mount Volta now, and they don't know what the situation is.

¡°Order the artillery, move the position, stop the bombardment, and conserve your strength!¡± Wang Yuze hesitated for a moment, but still issued the order.

"Yes, Marshal!" The signal corps immediately sent a report to the Ninth Brigade.

Soon, the artillery of the Western Sichuan Army stopped shelling.  The soldiers pulled the cannon from its emplacement and moved it to the prepared position that had been built long ago.  In just a short period of time, the artillery of the Western Sichuan Army had lost one-third of its artillery, leaving only 48 Type 82 infantry guns and 31 remaining.  There are 18 remaining 24 105mm light howitzers.

The artillery of the Western Sichuan Army stopped firing, which greatly cheered up the British and Indian troops.  Although they also lost dozens of cannons, they only had 102 3-inch cannons and 21 4.5-inch cannons left.  But overall, they still won the artillery battle.  At least, their artillery is still firing, while the artillery of the Western Sichuan Army has died down.

After the artillery interference of the Western Sichuan Army was eliminated, the artillery of the British and Indian Army concentrated their artillery fire on the Western Sichuan Army's defense line, bombarding the Western Sichuan Army's defense line wantonly, clearing obstacles for the infantry's subsequent charge.

¡° Seeing our own infantry struggling to hold up under the opponent¡¯s artillery fire, the artillerymen of the Western Sichuan Army felt very aggrieved.

"Batalion Commander, let's fire! Even if we're all out, we won't hesitate!" The artillerymen of the Western Sichuan Army asked for battle one by one.

"Wait a moment, I'll ask the young marshal for instructions." The commander of the artillery battalion nodded and then said.  The order to stop the bombardment was given by Wang Yuze, and he would not dare to disobey even if he had ten courages.  However, he has thought of a better way.

A few minutes later, Wang Yuze responded to the telegram and agreed with his tactics.

"All artillery positions, aim at the British artillery position. Fire five rounds rapidly! Then cease fire immediately and move to position 3!" the artillery battalion commander ordered.  When building the artillery position, in addition to the main position No. 1, they also built two additional backup positions. Now, they are completely put to use.

"Yes!" Artillery Gate immediately accepted the order excitedly.

"Boom! Boom! Boom!" The artillery of the Western Sichuan Army, which had been silent for less than ten minutes, opened fire again.  In just two minutes, more than two hundred artillery shells slammed into the British artillery position.

The British artillery that was ravaging the Western Sichuan Army's defense line was suddenly blown away.  More than a dozen cannons were blown up by the cannons of the Western Sichuan Army in the recent shelling.

"This damn guy still dares to start an artillery battle with us, adjust the direction of the bombardment, and destroy all the cannons of these yellow-skinned monkeys!" the British artillery commander roared.

The British artillery immediately began to turn their muzzles.  Crazy bombardment was launched at the place where the Western Sichuan Army fired artillery.  However, at this moment, the artillery of the Western Sichuan Army has withdrawn from the No. 2 artillery position and deployed to the No. 3 artillery position.  Although the British artillery attack was fierce, it did not cause any damage to the Western Sichuan Army.

After moving to Position 3, the artillery of the Western Sichuan Army once again targeted the artillery of the British Army.

"Still fire 5 rounds rapidly! Then immediately move to position 1!" the artillery battalion commander of the Western Sichuan Army ordered.

"Boom! Boom! Boom!" The artillery of the Western Sichuan Army started bombarding again, and more than two hundred shells hit the British artillery position.  The results achieved this time were greater than the last time.  More than twenty British artillery pieces were blown up.

After the bombardment was completed, the artillery of the Western Sichuan Army immediately began to move.  As soon as they moved, Position No. 3 fell under fierce bombardment by the British army.

" Subsequently, the artillery of the Western Sichuan Army moved back and forth between No. 1, 2, and 3 Artillery Positions. Although the artillery category was quite difficult, its own losses were very small. On the contrary, it caused great losses to the British artillery.  Under the almost rogue tactics of the Western Sichuan Army, the British artillery suffered very heavy losses.  After several times, only a few dozen cannons were left.

The British artillery commander was so angry that he screamed, but at this moment, he knew very well that this time they lost the artillery battle with the Western Sichuan Army, and they lostVery thorough.  In order to preserve his strength, he even had to order the artillery to withdraw from the artillery range of the Western Sichuan Army.

The retreat of the British artillery immediately stunned the British and Indian troops who were still waiting for artillery support.
