(Thanks to the book friend Can¡¯t Fly Birds for the tip!)

There was silence at night. In order to avoid being bombarded by the enemy, no bonfires were lit in the camps of the Western Sichuan Army or the British and Indian Army.  It¡¯s a bit cool in April at the southern foothills of the Himalayas.  Because the southwest monsoon brings a large amount of water vapor from the Indian Ocean, it is too high after reaching the southern foothills of the Himalayas. After cooling, it turns into fog and lingers in the air, making the visibility here at night very low.

After the fierce battle during the day, most of the soldiers of the Western Sichuan Army had fallen asleep, leaving only a few sentries to pay close attention to the enemy's situation.  In the trenches, the soldiers of the Western Sichuan Army were wrapped in thick blankets, cuddled together and fell into a deep sleep.  The fierce battle during the day made them very tired. Only by ensuring adequate sleep can they have the energy to devote themselves to the fierce battle tomorrow.

Hundreds of meters away in front of the Western Sichuan Army's position, soldiers from the Ninth Brigade lit several bonfires, illuminating the nearby area to avoid possible sneak attacks by the British and Indian troops.  During the day's battle, the British and Indian troops suffered heavy losses, and they must not give up.

At two o'clock in the middle of the night, when a person is most tired, there was a noise in the British-Indian army camp.  Many British soldiers, dressed in gray military uniforms, walked out from the battalion commander. After lining up, they quietly left the military camp and secretly advanced towards the Western Sichuan Army's Volt Mountain position.  These people were members of the Gurkha Infantry Brigade of the British-Indian Army.

Leo, the commander of the Gurkha Infantry Brigade?  Jones is preparing to let his soldiers take action tonight to break through the Western Sichuan Army's defense line.  For night fighting, his Gurkha Infantry Brigade was very good at it.  He also believed that his soldiers would be able to complete the mission.

"Parley, you lead your people to attack first, and the large force will follow you. After taking care of the sentries of the Western Sichuan Army, we will launch a full-scale attack. We must ensure victory!" Gurkha Infantry Brigade  Brigadier Leo?  Jones said to a short soldier who was only a little over 1.6 meters tall.

"Yes, Brigadier!" Parley replied.  He is a Gurkha and one of the few officers among the Gurkhas. Although he is only a company commander, he is already very remarkable for the Gurkhas who generally can only be soldiers.  .  The Gurkhas are generally not tall, with an average height of less than 1.6 meters. However, their short bodies hide powerful explosive power and are more flexible. They are natural soldiers.

Soon, Parley set off with hundreds of meters of his soldiers. They did not carry heavy weapons, only rifles and their unique Gurkha sabers.  Gurkha British soldiers all kept a Gurkha scimitar.  This kind of knife uses special technology to be very sharp.  It is also in line with ergonomic principles. The front part of the blade is curved downward, allowing all gravity to be concentrated on the blade when swinging the knife.  Gurkhas practice sword skills when they are young, and the coming-of-age ceremony involves cutting off a cow's head with a single stroke of a machete.  If you can't cut it off, you will be laughed at.  Rather than using firearms, they need the feeling of cutting off the enemy's head with a saber.

Parley led his soldiers and quietly groped forward in the darkness.  The fog gave them the best cover, allowing them to move forward secretly in front of the Western Sichuan Army's position.  The enemies thousands of meters behind them are a large number of soldiers from the British-Indian Gurkha Infantry Brigade. Regardless of whether the attack by Parley and others is effective, they will launch a strong attack as soon as possible.  Make every effort to break through the Western Sichuan Army's defense line.  Other units in the British and Indian troops were also ready, because the combat effectiveness of Indian soldiers was worrying, so Henry?  Wellesley gathered all the remaining troops of the 21st Infantry Brigade and the 32nd Infantry Brigade. Once the Gurkha Infantry Brigade breaks through the Western Sichuan Army's defense line, these troops will go into battle and completely defeat the Western Sichuan Army.  Comprehensively capture the Western Sichuan Army's positions in Volta Mountain.  By then, they will be not far from victory.

For this battle, Henry?  Wellesley had great confidence. He believed that a miracle would happen tonight, and by then, he would not have to worry about his career being affected.  On the contrary, after a great victory, he will definitely be rewarded when he returns home, and what awaits him will be promotion.  If he fails, he will probably be forced to take off his military uniform as soon as he returns.

The bonfire in front of the Western Sichuan Army position made a crackling sound.  The blazing fire illuminated the surrounding area.  However, because of the fog, it cannot illuminate too far away.  The sentries of the Western Sichuan Army stared at the front of the position attentively. Although they were very tired after fighting for a day and wanted to sleep, they had a heavy responsibility and could not be negligent in the slightest.

Gurkha officer Parley and his soldiers carefully avoided the piles of bonfires, and then, covered by the fog, they successfully approached less than ten meters away from the Western Sichuan Army's position.  Then, he stopped advancing. In the trench in front of him, there was a soldier of the Western Sichuan Army. The sentry was observing the surroundings nervously.  However, the sentry was a little drowsy. Although he forced himself to open his eyes, it was obvious that he could not hold on for long.  After seeing that the surroundings were still quiet, I was ready to close my eyes and squint.

At this time, Parley took action.  He rushed out of the thick fog toward an agile cheetah.  The distance of ten meters disappeared in a flash.  He jumped into the trench of the Western Sichuan Army with a single arrow. He slashed the Gurkha saber in his hand and chopped off the head of the sentry of the Western Sichuan Army with one blow.  The soldiers behind him followed suit and rushed out of the thick fog to kill the sentries of the Western Sichuan Army.

"The enemy is attacking! Get up!" The sentry of the Western Sichuan Army was stunned by this change and shouted quickly.  At the same time, the rifle in his hand also fired.

¡°Bang!¡± The clear gunshot sounded far and wide in the silent night.  The soldiers of the Western Sichuan Army who were sleeping soundly were immediately woken up.  After that, they realized what happened and immediately grabbed their weapons and started to fight back.

"Come on!" The large troops of the Gurkha Infantry Brigade immediately launched a rapid attack after hearing the gunshots.  For a well-trained Gurkha soldier, it only takes more than two minutes to cover the distance of several thousand meters.

"Boom!" A flare shot up into the sky, and the dazzling light dispersed the thick fog, revealing all the soldiers of the Gurkha Infantry Brigade.  The soldiers of the 9th Brigade of the Western Sichuan Army, while clearing out the Gurkha infantry who had invaded the position, launched an attack against the main force of the charging Gurkha Infantry Brigade.

¡°Click, click, click!¡± The heavy machine gun made a low roar, and bullets shot through the thick fog, knocking down the attacking Gurkha infantry brigade soldiers to the ground.  However, more Gurkha infantrymen rushed forward quickly over the bodies of their companions.

Parley and others who broke into the trenches of the Western Sichuan Army also played a considerable role.  The Gurkha sabers in their hands were swung with unstoppable courage.

"Fire! We must repel these enemies!" The ninth brigade commander Du Qizheng, deputy brigade commander Zhang Ruifeng and chief of staff Qian Tailin were all awakened by the battle, and they immediately issued orders.

"Boom! Boom!" The artillery of the Western Sichuan Army began to bombard, but due to the obstruction of thick fog and poor visibility, the effect of their bombardment was greatly limited.

The reserve team was also thrown into the battle, giving priority to clearing out the Gurkha infantry who had invaded the trenches.  Although these Gurkha infantry were very brave, they still had to suffer under the encirclement and suppression by the superior strength of the Western Sichuan Army.  However, their troops of hundreds of people caused two to three hundred casualties of the Western Sichuan Army.

At this time, the main force of the Gurkha Infantry Brigade had already reached the front of the Western Sichuan Army.

Round after round of illumination bombs rose into the sky, illuminating the battlefield.  Heavy machine guns and rifle shots rang out.

"Grenade!" Seeing that the soldiers of the Gurkha Infantry Brigade had rushed closer, the junior officers of the Western Sichuan Army ordered one after another.

Hand grenades were thrown out one after another, killing a large number of Gurkha soldiers.

However, despite the best efforts of the Western Sichuan Army, they were still unable to stop the Gurkha Infantry Brigade's attack.  The defense lines in many areas were broken through, and the two sides fought fiercely in the trenches.

The Gurkha saber, the bayonet in the hands of the Western Sichuan Army, launched the most intense hand-to-hand combat.  Every moment, soldiers were killed.

"Brigade Commander, the first line of defense has been breached. The British and Indian troops have attacked in large numbers. Let the soldiers tear it down!" Deputy Brigadier Zhang Ruifeng suggested.  The first line of defense has been breached. The Western Sichuan Army and the British and Indian Army fought together, making it impossible for the Western Sichuan Army located on the second line of defense to open fire.

"Alas! Order the troops on the first line of defense to retreat!" Du Qizheng could only sigh heavily and gave the order.  He did not expect that the attack by the British and Indian troops would be so fierce. With the help of night attacks, they easily tore through the first line of defense of the 9th Brigade.  If they do not retreat now, the soldiers deployed by the Ninth Brigade on the first line of defense will only be killed or injured under the attack of the superior British and Indian troops.

After receiving the order to retreat, the soldiers of the Ninth Brigade immediately retreated and withdrew along the communication trench to the second line of defense.  Soldiers from the Gurkha Rifle Brigade gave chase, but heavy machine guns deployed on the second line of defense opened fire, knocking them all to the ground.

Soon, the troops deployed by the Ninth Brigade on the first line of defense withdrew. However, only half of the original three thousand people came back, and all the remaining people were sacrificed.  Such a result was extremely difficult for Du Qizheng and others to accept.  However, they had no time to blame themselves. After taking the first line of defense, the Gurkha Infantry Brigade launched a fierce attack on the second line of defense of the Western Sichuan Army.  And the Western Sichuan Army has no way out.  There are only two lines of defense in total.??, if the second line of defense fails again, the entire Volta Mountain will be lost.
