Irkutsk, the second largest city in Eastern Siberia.  Located at the northern end of Lake Baiga.  The confluence of the Angara and Irkutsk rivers.  It has a continental climate with long cold periods.  Known as the "Heart of Siberia".  Irkutsk has played various roles in its nearly 250-year history, including a Siberian expedition base, a penal colony and a gold rush town.  In the late 19th century, gold mines were discovered in the Lena River, and the Siberian gold rush began. People rushed here hoping to become rich.  It became a fortress city in Siberia from 1661 to 1669, and became the capital of Eastern Siberia in 1764.  In the 19th century, it became an important transshipment point for trade between Imperial Russia and China.  River port, railway.  It emerged with the opening of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the mining of nearby coal fields.

The current Governor-General of Eastern Siberia, Anuchin (formerly written as Muravyov, now changed to this name), rules this snowy land for Tsar Nicholas II.

In the Governor¡¯s Palace in Irkutsk, Governor Anuchin was receiving Lieutenant General Vladimir, the commander of the Eastern Siberian Army.  Lieutenant General Vladimir is one of the important assistants to Governor Anuchin.  The task assigned to them by the Tsar, in addition to maintaining the stability of this area, also required continued expansion southward.  Siberia is too cold, and the Russians need the warmer lands in the south.

"General Vladimir has just received a telegram from Consul Shishma Levli in Kulun. The Mongolian rebellion has been quelled, but the Mongolian princes have asked us to send troops to help them. Should we seize this opportunity?  , what about expanding southward?" Governor Anuchin asked.

"Of course, Your Majesty the Governor, my army is ready. Although the weak Mongols were suppressed, their invitation gave us the best excuse. We may be able to take the opportunity to include Mongolia in our  Under the rule of Russia. For example, how wonderful it is to establish a Mongolian country under the protection of Russia!" Lieutenant General Vladimir said with bright eyes.  He had long wanted to be transferred back to Moscow.  In this place of Irkutsk, although it holds a high position of authority.  But this place is too barren and nothing compared to Moscow.  Lieutenant General Vladimir hopes to establish meritorious service and then be transferred back to Moscow. If not, he will be transferred back to Europe. He does not want to stay in a place like Eastern Siberia.

"However, the Chinese have deployed 20,000 troops in Mongolia. If we enter Mongolia, we will definitely encounter their counterattack. In this case, it may trigger a war between our two countries. According to the "Pacific Alliance Treaty", Japan and the United States  We will also declare war on China. In this case, we will ignite the flames of war. But now, the Trans-Siberian Railway has not been fully completed, and the empire is not ready yet. If we start a war now, it may be detrimental to us!"  Governor Anuchin was a little worried.  As a senior Russian official, he naturally knew that the time for the Pacific Alliance to go to war with China was after 1900, not 1899!

"Your Excellency, Governor, this is a good opportunity for us. If we let it go, it will be difficult to have such an opportunity again. The railway from Beijing to Kulun built by the Chinese has been opened. Next spring, they will  A large-scale army will be sent into Mongolia. By then, it will not be so easy for us to occupy Mongolia!" Lieutenant General Vladimir persuaded.  He has already deployed two divisions of troops in Kyaktu. As long as the order is given, they can cross the border and attack the city of buying and selling.  The Chinese ** team only deployed a cavalry battalion in Buying City.  Once a war begins, they will not be their opponents at all.

"General Vladimir, I need to ask Moscow for instructions, and the Tsar will make a decision!" Anuchin said at last.

"But, this will miss the opportunity to fight!" Lieutenant General Vladimir insisted.

"General, I told you to ask Moscow for instructions first and listen to me!" Anuchin said with a frown.  He is the governor of Eastern Siberia, and Lieutenant General Vladimir should listen to him.

"Well, Your Majesty the Governor, I'll be waiting for your good news!" Vladimir had no choice but to compromise.  Although he controlled the army, he was only Anuchin's assistant.  If Anuchin gave him a stumbling block, he would never be able to transfer back to Moscow.

When Anuchin sent this news back to St. Petersburg, it also triggered a debate within Tsarist Russia.  Tsar Nicholas II saw this as an excellent opportunity and asked the army to take immediate action to bring Mongolia under Russian rule.  However, his decision was met by Prime Minister Sergey?  There was strong opposition from the important ministers headed by Witte.  The reason is simple. Now all Russian money, including loans obtained from Britain and France, has been invested in the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway.  Now the Treasury simply cannot come up with the money to support a war.  Moreover, this was different from the original time for the war planned by the Pacific Alliance, and Russia was not ready.  None of the ministers were willing to take this risk.

?The fierce argument lasted for three days. In the end, Tsar Nicholas II stubbornly gave the order to attack.  However, he assured cabinet ministers that this was just a low-intensity military conflict.  Russia will not declare war on China. It can occupy Mongolia before spring just relying on the army of Eastern Siberia.  And after spring, it will be enough for Russia to prepare for war.

The cabinet ministers had no choice but to agree.  They also have strong confidence in the Russian army, thinking that the Russian army can easily defeat the Chinese army deployed in Mongolia and easily occupy Mongolia.

After receiving the order from Tsar Nicholas II, the Governor of Eastern Siberia Anuchin immediately ordered the attack.  Lieutenant General Vladimir immediately issued an attack order to the Russian 6th Cossack Cavalry Division and 75th Infantry Division, which were already stationed in Kyakhta.  The two divisions, with a total of more than 16,000 men, set out from Kyaktu, braved the wind and snow, and launched an attack on the trading city in the south.

Maimaicheng is a border city in northern Mongolia. It was an important border town between China and Russia in the Qing Dynasty.  In 1727 (the fifth year of Yongzheng's reign), China and Russia signed the Treaty of Blensky (Treaty of Kyakhta), establishing trade between China and Russia.  According to the treaty, the two countries were bounded by the Kyakhta River, and Kyakhta in Hebei was assigned to Russia.  In the Qing Dynasty, a new town was built in Henan as a trading place between China and Russia, so it got the Chinese name "Business City".

As an important trading center between China and Russia, tens of thousands of people live here all year round, not including the merchants who gather here every year.  Although the relationship between China and Russia is tense, it does not affect the trade between the two countries.  Therefore, it still thrives here.  It's just that in winter, due to the ice and snow cover, a large number of merchants have returned to the interior, leaving only a small number of personnel stationed here in the Buying and Selling City.  In order to protect this important border town, after the overthrow of the Manchu Qing Dynasty, the Imperial Army deployed a cavalry battalion here, namely the 4th Battalion of the 9th Cavalry Brigade of the 3rd Cavalry Army.  The headquarters of the 9th Cavalry Brigade is located in Darkhan, one hundred kilometers south.  Other troops are scattered in areas that do not belong to northern Mongolia.

In winter, the narrow Kyaktu River has frozen, and pedestrians can easily walk across the ice.  The thick ice can even be crossed on horseback.  However, the ice is slippery, so if you don't want to fall, it's better to just stay calm.  Kyaktu is only two kilometers away from the trading city. If it were summer, the cavalry would have taken a few minutes, but now, they had to walk southward one step at a time.

¡°Squad leader, look to the north, there are so many people, what do you want to do?¡± On the low wall of the trading city, a class of soldiers on duty suddenly shouted.  Densely packed Russians appeared to the north of the Kyaktu River, stepped on the ice, and headed south.

"Huzi, please sound the alarm quickly. Everyone is in position, Lao Maozi is going to attack us!" the squad leader shouted.

"Yes!" The entire squad of soldiers immediately took action.  The main personnel of the Third Cavalry Army are all Mongolians.  After undergoing systematic training, they have become qualified cavalry who are brave and good at fighting.

"Dang! Dang! Dang!" The alarm bell on the city wall was sounded.  The biting north wind carried the sound of bells throughout the trading city.  Both the garrison and the residents here all got out of the warm houses and looked at the city wall in surprise.  Once the alarm bell is sounded, it means that an enemy is coming!

"Could it be that the Russians are calling?" Everyone couldn't help but think of this question.

"The stubborn old man has indeed come to attack. Send power to the brigade headquarters and Cullen Department immediately!" Dong Jiarong, commander of the 4th Battalion of the 9th Cavalry Brigade, ordered.

"Yes, battalion commander!" The signal soldier immediately ran out to send a telegram.  Other soldiers of the 4th Battalion also grabbed their weapons and rushed to the city wall, preparing to resist the Russian attack.

"Turgenev, it seems that the Chinese are prepared! However, they only have a thousand people and are not our opponent at all!" Major General Mikhail, commander of the Russian 75th Infantry Division, said very relaxedly.

"Hmph! I heard that they are a cavalry battalion, but I don't know if they have the guts to have a cavalry battle with our great Cossack cavalry!" Major General Turgenev said.  However, in this icy and snowy environment, the horses could not gallop, let alone fight a regular battle between cavalry.

Mikhail shook his head speechlessly. He really didn¡¯t know what Vladimir was thinking.  He actually asked for an attack in this horrible weather.  This made it impossible for him to bring out his artillery, but he worked hard to bring out some small-caliber artillery.  I don't know if these artillery are useful or whether they can suppress the Chinese troops in the trading city.  If possible, he hopes to launch another attack in the summer.  In that case, his troops can easily capture this place.
