Bodhidharma, one of the guardians of the Demonic Illustration

Bodhidharma (-535), also known as Bodhidharma, referred to as Bodhidharma, was a native of the Southern and Northern Dynasties and the first founder of Chinese Zen Buddhism.  The Literature Museum, Zen Master Baozhi and Master Fu are collectively known as the Three Great Masters of the Liang Dynasty.

Bodhidharma is translated as enlightenment. The original meaning of Bodhi is enlightenment, and the original meaning of Bodhidharma is Buddhism.

It is said that Bodhidharma is the author of the "Yi Jin Jing", the creator of the seventy-two unique skills of Shaolin, the preacher who brought Zen Buddhism to China, a figure with many magical legends, and the first patriarch of Chinese Buddhism.

There are many legends about Bodhidharma's life experience in later generations.  Disciple Tan Lin said that he was originally the third son of King Xiangzhi of Nantian, and later became a monk.  However, "Luoyang Jialan Ji" records that he was from Persia in the Western Regions.

Bodhidharma is the 28th generation disciple of Sakyamuni and the 28th generation founder of Tianzhu Zen Sect.  Once, Bodhidharma asked his master where he would go to preach after he obtained the true meaning of Buddhism.

The master ordered him to go to China and told him not to go to the south. The monarchs in the south were so obsessed with success that they could not understand the true meaning of Buddhism.

During the Liu and Song Dynasties of the Northern and Southern Dynasties (AD 470-478), Bodhidharma took a boat to South Vietnam (now Guangzhou) in China.

There is a monument to the first place of Xilai at its landing place (that is, the area of ??Xilaizheng Street on the north side of Xiajiu Road, Liwan District, Guangzhou City, which was a port in ancient times).  There is Bodhidharma Washing Bowl Spring in Guangxiao Temple, commonly known as Bodhidharma Well.

There is also the thousand-year-old Hualin Temple (originally named Xilai'an. The stone tower in the temple contains 21 relics of the true body of Sakyamuni Buddha), which is said to have been built by Bodhidharma.

According to "The Record of the Lankavatara Teacher", after Bodhidharma arrived in China, he became a disciple of Qunabhadra and belonged to the Yiyang Sect (also known as the Lankavatara Sect) in South India.

Seeking Nabhadra, translated as meritorious and virtuous.  A native of Central Tianzhu, he translated four volumes of the Lankavatara Abhadra Precious Sutra in the 20th year of Yuanjia in the Southern Song Dynasty (AD 443).

Later Bodhidharma taught his disciples this four-volume version of the Lankavatara Sutra.  In addition to the Lankavatara Sutra, Bodhidharma also attached great importance to the Prajna Sutra and the Vimalak¨©rti Sutra. This may be because he lived in the Jiangnan area and was influenced by Jiangnan Buddhism.

According to the traditional saying, after Bodhidharma came to China by sea, he heard that Emperor Wu of Liang believed in Buddhism, so he went to Jinling (now Nanjing, Jiangsu) to talk with him about Buddhism.

Because Bodhidharma and Emperor Wu of Liang had different Buddhist ideals, they crossed the river with a reed and stopped at the Shaolin Temple in Songshan Mountain.  He has been facing the wall in the temple for nine years, and is known as the Brahmin who watches on the wall.  The "Yi Jin Jing" and "Marrow Cleansing Jing" were left in the cave.

Before 478 AD, Bodhidharma traveled by sea to Nanyue, China (today¡¯s Guangdong on the other side of Hainan Island), where he studied under Qunabhadra and was one of the Lankavatara masters at that time.  He was also proficient in Zen and stayed in the Jiangnan area for a long time.

After that, he traveled east to the Northern Wei Dynasty, traveled to Songluo, and taught Zen.  The Zen method he taught was highly controversial at the time, and his main disciples were only Daoyu, Huike, Tan Lin and others.

There is no record of the meeting between Emperor Wu of Liang and Bodhidharma in "The Biography of the Eminent Monk" and "The Records of the Master of Lankavatara".  Hu Shih's two articles, "The Examination of Bodhidharma" and "The Examination of Bodhidharma", proved based on the "Extended Biography of Eminent Monks" written by Daoxuan in the early Tang Dynasty that Bodhidharma came to China at the latest before the demise of the Liu Song Dynasty (479).  At this time, the Liang Dynasty had not yet been established.

Later generations of Buddhists regarded the teaching of Buddhism outside the teachings as a symbol of Bodhidharma Zen.

The Zen lineage established by later generations is: the first ancestor Bodhidharma, the second ancestor Huike, the third ancestor Sengcan, the fourth ancestor Daoxin, the fifth ancestor Hongren, and the sixth ancestor Huineng.  However, its lineage is still controversial.  Legend has it that Bodhidharma left a straw sandal to recognize the second ancestor Huike.

The Zen method taught by Bodhidharma has incomplete information.  Mainly written by his disciple Tan Lin.

The theory of two elements and four elements is its main theory, centered on the Wall Viewing method.  First of all, he taught Mahayana Buddhism, the so-called enlightenment.  That is to enter the path of Bodhi.

The method of entering the Mahayana path, in brief.  One is the rationale, and the other is the practice.

?????????????????????????? To understand the sect is to rely on teachings to understand the sect, that is, to watch on the wall. The sect is the self-transmission and self-realization of the holy teachings mentioned in the Lankavatara Sutra, but to understand the sect, you need to borrow the teachings.

According to Tan Lin¡¯s teachings, I firmly believe that the true nature of all beings is the same, but it is covered by the guest world and cannot be revealed. This is also the Tathagatagarbha thought held in the Lankavatara Sutra.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????OUTlly out of faith and return to the truth, start to study by concentrating on the wall.

But after enlightenment, you still have to issue it and use the four elements to restrain yourself and benefit others in the world.  Bodhidharma's Zen method is concise and profound, showing the true face of Indian Mahayana Buddhism and developing the forerunner of Chinese Zen Buddhism.

The focus of the Four Elements is to persuade people to get rid of all love, hate and passion in daily life, and work hard according to Buddhist teachings.  The rationale belongs to theory, and the practice belongs to practice, that is, the Zen method is combined with the teachings, which is the simple Zen method of Bodhidharma.

The Gaozuo Temple in Yuhuatai, Nanjing, is said to be the largest temple in the world. The Patriarch listened to the presiding divine light here and shook his head in disapproval. The divine light was surprised. He followed him to Shishi Mountain and broke his arm in the snow to seek Dharma. He eventually became Huike, the second ancestor of Zen Buddhism.

There is the Bodhidharma Cave at the foot of the Shogunate Mountain on the edge of the Yangtze River in Nanjing. According to legend, Bodhidharma crossed the river with a reed from here. Changlu Town, the largest town in the north of the Yangtze River, has the ruins of Changlu Temple. It was built to commemorate the founder of Bodhidharma, who crossed the river with a reed.  It has been repeatedly abandoned and rebuilt in the past dynasties, and is now being rebuilt in another place. There is the ruins of Dingshan Temple at Pukou in the north of the Yangtze River. It was the first temple in Xi after Bodhidharma crossed the river. There are ruins such as Bodhidharma Rock. As the ancestral home of Zen Buddhism, it is better than Shaolin Temple.  Still early.  The temple is currently being rebuilt.

Tan Lin's "Brief Analysis of the Four Elements of the Mahayana and its Preface": A native of South Tianzhu in the Western Region, he was the third son of the great Brahmin king.

"Luoyang Jialan Ji": The ascetic Bodhidharma in the Western Regions was also a barbarian from the Persian country.

"Xu Seng Biography": At the beginning, he reached South Vietnam in the Song Dynasty, and at the end he traveled north to the Wei Dynasty.  Follow where it stops and teach Zen

"Records of the Master of Lankavatara": Bodhidharma, the Tripitaka Master of the Wei Dynasty, inherited the Tripitaka of Nabhadra.

"The Biography of Hui Ke" in the "Xu Seng Biography": At the beginning, Zen Master Bodhidharma taught Ke Ke in four volumes of Lankavatara, saying: I look at the Han Dynasty, and this is the only sutra. The benevolent people can follow it and save the world.

It is recommended that Nabhadra is the first ancestor, Bodhidharma is the second ancestor, and Shenxiu is the seventh ancestor.

Emperor Wu of Liang was an emperor who believed deeply in Buddhism. After he came to the throne, he built temples, wrote sutras, taught monks, and created many statues. He proudly asked Bodhidharma: How much merit have I gained from doing these things?  Bodhidharma said: There is no merit.  Emperor Wu asked again: Why is there no merit?  Bodhidharma said: This is a done thing, not a real merit.  Emperor Wu couldn't understand, so Bodhidharma crossed the river and entered Wei.  Notes on the anonymous "Magical Treasures of the Past Dynasties" unearthed in Dunhuang

"Huiyuan Bodhidharma Chapter": Bodhidharma stayed at the Shaolin Temple in Songshan Mountain. He sat facing the wall and remained silent all day long.  People cannot predict it, so it is called Brahman watching from the wall.

"Shimen Zhengtong": Being so at ease with the true Dharma alone is called watching on the wall.  Guest dust and falsehood will not enter the wall.

Tan Lin's "A Brief Discussing of the Four Elements of the Mahayana and the Preface": Those who have lost their hearts and are silent will not fail to believe, and the flow of others will lead to ridicule.

"Shimen Zhengtong": The Zen disciples, the first Bodhidharma, traveled far and wide across the desolate mountains and came to this land.  At the beginning, he established the theory of writing, Nanquan Universal Vow, and began to sing the other words to realize the Buddha's nature without establishing writing.

"Blue Rock": Bodhidharma saw from afar that this land had Mahayana roots, so he traveled across the sea to get it.  Just pass on the heart seal and enlighten the lost.  Without establishing words, it directly points to the human heart to see one's nature and become a Buddha.

"Preface to the Collection of Zen Sources": Bodhidharma teaches people to be at peace by watching on the wall. Externally, all conditions are stopped, and there is no breath in the heart. The heart is like a wall, and you can enter the Tao. Isn't this the method of sitting in meditation?

"Chuan Deng Lu": Dharma for the second ancestor, Zhi taught: "Without all conditions, without breathing in the heart, the heart is like a wall, you can enter the Tao."

"The Vajra Samadhi Sutra" says that the rational entrance is enlightenment, and the wall view is a unique Zen method taught by Bodhidharma.

Tan Lin's "A Brief Analysis of the Four Lines and Preface of the Mahayana Path": Those who enter are the so-called four lines; the rest of the lines are all included in this line.  What are the four elements?  The first is the practice of complaining, the second is the practice of following circumstances, the third is the practice of seeking nothing, and the fourth is the practice of Dharma.

"Continued Biography of Eminent Monks and Zen Practice": The Mahayana wall view has the highest achievements, is a popular scholar in the world, and is admired like a city.

ps: On Saturday, I just had a thought. When I was about to go out, there were already many guests. I had no choice but to continue to lie down and read Zhang Ailing's book. It was the same three pages as before. There is a lot to talk about women's clothes. She is a woman, but she has a very sharp eye.  .

I lost 50,000 yuan yesterday, so I just want to continue sleeping.  )
