The "uselessness" and "usefulness" of reading (reading, pleasure reading) - Li Jian (musician) The so-called meaning of reading is probably to broaden people's horizons  , have a clearer understanding of oneself without being arrogant.  The more books a person reads, the more aware he is of his own shortcomings.  But I don¡¯t regard reading professional books as reading in a complete sense. In my opinion, no matter what industry a person is engaged in, he should read some books on the humanities and social sciences.  People often ask me: What is the relationship between reading and music creation?  Sometimes they are related, sometimes they are not.  I have been reading ancient poetry recently, and I often marvel at the amazing imagination of the ancients. This kind of reading can refine my language and inspire my way of expression.  But more reading in life exerts a subtle influence invisibly.  Therefore, I advocate non-utilitarian reading. I suggest that you read some seemingly useless books and cultivate some seemingly useless hobbies to cultivate your sentiments and purify your soul.  Pragmatism is what we need to be particularly vigilant about today.  This can be seen from the lack of basic theoretical majors and the popularity of applied majors in universities today.  I have heard similar questions countless times: Is mathematical research useful?  Is Goldbach's conjecture useful?  You must know that without the study of these basic theories, our today's computer technology would not be possible. Some seemingly useless theories have constructed today's technology.  Actually, I don¡¯t read much, but I like to read the same book over and over again, especially classics.  This was inspired by the writer Yu Hua, who almost never reads best-selling books.  Nowadays, there are so many publications, and modern people have less and less time to read, it is difficult for you to have the time and energy to test which books are good or bad.  Most of the various books placed in airport bookstores and train station bookstores will make people disappointed.  But classics don¡¯t. Whenever you read a classic, you will come back with a rich experience.  People often say: Interest is the best teacher.  But I think you shouldn¡¯t read solely based on interest. Sometimes you have to force yourself to read some strenuous books, so that you can make progress.  The writer Marquez forces himself to work from 9 am to 2 pm every day. If he really can't write anything, he has to sit at the desk for two hours.  Reading also requires self-discipline and self-enforcement.  Reading fairy tales is effortless, but one cannot just read fairy tales in one's life. One has to force oneself to read some books that are incomprehensible and difficult to read.  Books like "In Search of Lost Time" and "Khazar Dictionary" are not as easy to read as Chicken Soup for the Soul, but if you force yourself to read them, you will definitely gain something.  ?For me personally, reading is still a ritualistic behavior.  Just like I am used to pens when writing lyrics, I prefer paper books.  When the ancients studied, they paid attention to burning incense, bathing, drinking tea and chanting leisurely, pursuing the state of being remote, leisurely and self-sufficient.  But facing a bunch of binary digital codes on the electronic screen, what I smell is not the "scent of books", but the smell of industry.  Just as the Internet is so developed now, there are still many music lovers who collect old records and music CDs. The sense of ritual makes reading pleasant to the eyes, ears, and heart, more flavorful and more sacred.  For the whole society, there is currently a huge contrast.  Our publishing industry has huge numbers and a steady stream of new books, but from a global perspective, we are a country with very few readers per capita, far from what an ancient civilization should be.  Why?  This is worth pondering.  ©¤©¤Li Jian (interviewed by Ren Shanshan and Xu Lei) "People's Daily" (page 12, April 22, 2015)
