Previous page        Return to Catalog        Next page

Song Feng rode on his beloved maroon Anglo-Norman horse, walking slowly along with many companions of the Guards Cavalry Regiment on the official road from Shanhaiguan to Beijing.  +The Leng Tou Qing back then had grown into a powerful warrior. Song Feng looked at his companions, and excitement arose spontaneously in his heart.

The Guards Cavalry Regiment is a cavalry unit under the Xiwang Young Guards Regiment. It is one of the elites who followed Tan Shaoguang in the north and fought fierce battles with the ferocious Russians in harsh environments for many years.  They wore uniform military uniforms, helmets symbolizing the feathered forest guards of the Han family in the past, and a pair of breastplates on their chests. They carried five loaded revolvers on their horses and a stuffer on their backs.  There is a spinning spear, a sharp Gurkha cavalry special machete on the waist, and then there is one person and two horses.

Song Feng is the commander of this thousand-man cavalry regiment, but his equipment is the same as that of ordinary soldiers. He patted all the weapons he carried. These weapons are old friends who have accompanied him through fierce battles.

The initial Guards Cavalry Regiment was not equipped with Cespin rifles, only five revolvers and scimitars. However, relying on these equipment, they defeated the Qing Army's Heilongjiang Cavalry and the Russian Cavalry many times in the North.  Cossack Cavalry Regiment.  Last year, after Song Feng's Guards Cavalry Regiment was equipped with more advanced Sespin rifles, the Qing army and the Russians in the North were no longer opponents.

Song Feng fell in love with the Sespin Gun when he first saw it. It was one of the new weapons sent back to China by Hu Xueyan, who was sent by the West Palace to do business in the United States.  This Spencer m1859 0.52 caliber rifle was invented by American Christopher Spencer. Seth Spencer was originally a machinist at Sharps Company, a famous firearms manufacturer in Connaught, USA.  As early as the year of the U.S. economic crisis, Hu Xueyan obtained 40% of Sharps' equity through capital injection.  Became one of the shareholders of this arms company.

In fact, in history, the appearance of the Sespin repeater gun was a little two years later. But at this time, because of Hu Xueyan's capital injection, Sharps Company was in a much better situation, and Sespin used his spare time to build the first Spin gun.  After the rifle competition, he received Hu Xueyan's full support, so this firearm was released early.  After this gun came out last year.  Sharps Company produced three thousand, all of which were purchased by Hu Xueyan in the name of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and then sent back to China for trial use.  Historically, it was Sespin who successfully recommended this gun to the United States through continuous efforts. The process was very tortuous and long. It was in the later years of the American Civil War that this gun really shined.  .  But Hu Xueyan paid great attention to the development of this gun because he received instructions from the King of the West.  Therefore, this gun was able to come out early and be installed in the army.  This time it was not the US military but the Taiping Army.

This continuous ball gun fires 0.52 caliber metal shell rimfire bullets. The bullet was patented by Smith & Wesson in 1854 and was perfected by Benjamin Henry a few years later. The reason why this gun is not manufactured in large numbers is that new weapons need battlefield testing.  , bullet patent fees are also a reason.

But no matter what, more than a thousand cavalry members of the Guards Cavalry Regiment are equipped with such rifles, and their long-range firepower has been horribly improved.  The use of the Cespin repeating ball gun is very simple, it only requires a rotary locking bolt.  When the trigger guard is pulled down, the blocking mechanism retreats to open the chamber.  Pull out the empty cartridge case, and at the same time, the spring in the butt automatically pushes the next round out of the cartridge supply tube; when the retainer is pulled on, the locking machine advances, pushing the bullet into the cartridge chamber and locking the cartridge chamber at the same time.  The shooting action is: pull down the hammer, aim, pull the trigger, pull down the trigger guard, pull up the guard, pull down the hammer, aim, and when loading, take out the ammunition tube from the rear of the butt.  The entire process can be completed on horseback, so it became the weapon of choice for the King of the West's Guards Cavalry Regiment.

And the parts of this Spencer gun are easy to manufacture. It seems to have a complicated structure, but in fact there are not many parts, and most of them can be used with Sharp rifles. It was the cheapest continuous ball gun on the market at the time.  Of course, cheap is only relative. The unit price of US$40 is more than twice that of an ordinary muzzle-loading rifle.  And it was designed as a military rifle from the beginning, which is better in reliability and maintainability than the Henry type, which was designed as a civilian rifle.  The Spencer gun is also issued with a new type of ammunition box, which contains 10-13 loaded cartridges, each containing 14 rounds.  When loading, you don't need to load one round at a time, just change the barrel. At this time, the sustained rate of fire can reach 21 rounds/minute.

Therefore, the elite cavalry of this Young Guards Corps became the most elite cavalry regiment in the Taiping Army. None of the cavalry divisions of the other eight field armies of the Taiping Army had such elite weapons.

"Compared with other field cavalry divisions of the Taiping Army, the Elite Cavalry Regiment also lies in its other aspects, the first of which is the selection of personnel.  Each soldier of the Guards Cavalry Regiment must be over 1.8 meters tall. This condition directly sent Song Feng's old comrade Su Ji to the artillery unit, even though Su Ji was 1.75 meters tall, and during the physical examination, this kid was wearing  A pair of height-increasing riding boots, but unfortunately the physical examination required stripping off, so Su Ji went to the artillery unit

The second is the selection of horses. The Cavalry Guards all use French Anglo-Norman horses. As early as three years ago, the Agriculture Department of the Ministry of Household Affairs of the Taiping Rebellion introduced nearly 10,000 French Anglo-Norman horses. Most of them were used for breeding. Only 3,000 were used for breeding.  The remaining horses were given to the military.  It is said that the King of the West had a special liking for this kind of horse, and His Highness the King of the West also rode this kind of horse.

Then there is the almost cruel and inhumane training and elimination mechanism of the Guards Cavalry Regiment.  The Guards Cavalry Regiment requires soldiers to have very high discipline. In Song Feng's words, even if you are asked to charge towards a cliff during training, you must charge forward without hesitation!  Moreover, the soldiers of the Guards Cavalry Regiment must be infinitely loyal to the King of the West. In everyone's eyes, they are extremely fanatical soldiers, and they are always ready to sacrifice themselves for the King of the West.  The more than a thousand Guards Cavalry Regiment led by Song Feng were selected from the 100,000 young Taiping Army. The war created a large number of orphans. In the early years, the Taiping Boy Camp and the Salesian Bureaus in various places had already expanded countless times.  Tan Shaoguang's subordinates were all composed of young Taiping soldiers selected from local children's camps and Salesian bureaus. Selected from among 100,000 people, they were certainly the best of the best.

That's why they were able to continuously defeat their opponents under the harsh conditions in the North. The Qing Army's Heilongjiang Cavalry and the Russian Cossack Cavalry were all soldiers very adapted to fighting in the North, but they were all defeated by Song Feng and the others. The reason  right here.

After coming out of Shanhaiguan, Song Feng led this cavalry regiment as the vanguard. They galloped for more than 400 miles in two days and nights, even conquering Qian'an, Qianxi, Zunhua, Jizhou and other places. For some unknown reason, the Qing Dynasty in these places failed.  The Qing army did not resist at all. After seeing the flags of the Taiping Army in many places, the Qing army collapsed. Moreover, the number of Qing troops was not large. Zunhua and Jizhou were considered big cities, and there were only more than a thousand Qing troops inside.

After Song Feng conquered a city, he did not stop. He led the Guards Cavalry Regiment almost through the city and then continued on the road all night. He ate, slept and even urinated on horseback. When the horses were tired, they would transfer to another.  Horses, they are all equipped with one person and two horses.  Soldiers of the Guards Cavalry Regiment fight on horseback all year round. There is a joke in the army that if everyone were women, they might be able to give birth on horseback.

This is a true portrayal of the Guards Cavalry Regiment's proficiency in riding combat and equestrian skills. Their perseverance supported them, and their fanatical loyalty to the King of the West supported them as they marched towards the heart of the Qing Empire.

More than two hundred years ago, after Wu Sangui opened Shanhaiguan to lure Qing troops into the customs, the Qing troops also entered Beijing along this road. At that time, Li Zicheng's Dashun Army also did not do anything along the way, just like the Qing troops at that time.  Not the slightest resistance.  Regardless of the purpose of the Taiping Army's attack on the capital, they have always been the gravediggers of the Manchu Qing Dynasty. They came to destroy this decadent and declining dynasty!

After the Qing troops in the city behind them fled, the follow-up brigade took over. Since the Guards Cavalry Regiment had one man and two horses, they had already left their counterpart, the cavalry division of the First Army, behind, but their speed was also  It won't be too slow. Song Feng believes that the city behind him will be taken over by the cavalry division's follow-up troops. Then they will wait for the brigade to establish a supply line and continue to support the brigade's infantry and artillery to follow up.

The mission of the Guards Cavalry Regiment is very simple, that is, to get to the gates of Beijing before the British and French forces!

"The front has reached Shunyi! There is no trace of the Qing army!" The cavalry reconnaissance platoon sent out to explore the road came back. Song Feng cheered up and shouted loudly: "The whole army is galloping. We will pass through Shunyi tonight and arrive in Beijing tomorrow morning.  Below the city!"

Whistles sounded everywhere, and the helmets of the entire cavalry swayed in the wind, like patches of fine red maple leaf forest. The flying dust could not cover up the red color. They lined up neatly and headed towards Shunyi.  Able to maintain a strict cavalry formation even while galloping at high speeds!

Sure enough, Shunyi was not guarded by Qing soldiers. Perhaps the Qing soldiers had already fled without a trace. Song Feng did not enter the city. He continued on his way with his cavalry, passing Shunyi City towards the north of Beijing.

After galloping all night, there were still stars and moon in the dim sky in the morning. Song Feng and others reined in their horses together. A continuous city wall not far away appeared in their eyes. The city of Beijing under the morning glow was so beautiful.  In the vast and gorgeous scenery, Song Feng raised his right arm and shouted loudly: "Beijing City is right in front of you!" Then the soldiers of the Guards Cavalry Regiment cheered like a mountain and a tsunami!

Beijing!  Beijing!  Upon seeing this strange and majestic capital, every soldier of the Cavalry Guards screamed from the bottom of their hearts. None of them had been here, but they had known it since they were young.  Until this time, its walls had been inviolable to barbarians and now served as a barrier to Chinese armies.  (To be continued, please search Piaotian Literature.
