The 16th Mixed Brigade of the Beiyang Army is the army where Feng Yuxiang started. Although Lao Feng is from Baoding, his ancestral home is Anhui, and he has never been a direct descendant of Beiyang. In the Luanzhou Uprising, which the guy talked about all day long, the three battalion commanders  Two of them died heroically. Only Lao Feng escaped death because he was a classmate of Wang Huaiqing's son who suppressed the uprising. He was deported to Baoding and then to Beijing to be imprisoned in an army prison.

Fortunately, this guy had a great life. After arriving in Beijing, he was rescued and promoted by Lu Jianzhang, the director of the Military and Political Law Enforcement Department, and became the battalion commander of the Beijing Guards Army. He then worked hard all the way, starting from the front camp of the left-wing reserve army in April 1913, and continued all the way.  He rose through the ranks from the 1st Left Wing Regiment of the Beijing Guards Army, the 1st Left Wing Brigade of the Beijing Guards Army, and the 14th Brigade of the 7th Division of the Central Army.

Of course, apart from the fact that Lao Feng is indeed a talent, everything is inseparable from the in-law relationship between Lao Feng and Lu Jianzhang.

Lu Jianzhang, who successively served as the director of the Military Law Office, the commander of the Seventh Army Division and the governor of Shaanxi, was the direct uncle of Lao Feng¡¯s first wife, Liu Dezhen.

It was not until September 1914 that the 16th Mixed Brigade of the Central Army was formed in Xi'an. In just one and a half years, Feng Yuxiang went from battalion commander to mixed brigade commander. His fortune was as fast as a rocket. Of course, Lao Feng trained his troops.  There is a set of rules, and the discipline of the team can be considered strict, but the feudal patriarchal style is also quite powerful.

In Feng Yuxiang's eyes, the senior generals of the Feng Department were just dolls and children. His style of punishing people by kneeling down and telling them to smack their mouths over the phone has been consistent throughout. When Ji Hongchang became a division commander in the future, Feng Yuxiang would call him and still call him "Ji Hongchang."  When he knelt down, he knelt down honestly.

"I don't know what Lao Feng did. He was a typical representative of the Republic of China who wanted to be a politician even though he was a soldier. He kept shouting "worrying about national affairs and swearing to die to serve the country!" all day long.

16 The mixed brigade has been in his hands for less than three years, and it is as if it is run like an iron bucket that cannot be penetrated or splashed with water. This guy is also very particular about recruiting soldiers. He only recruits children from farmers and students, and unemployed homeless people have served as soldiers in other armies.  They don't want anything. Every time they capture a prisoner or disarm the other party, they are basically dismissed.

Later, all the direct generals of the 16th Mixed Brigade came from his guard and the military training camp. The generals who came from the sidelines could not lead troops in Feng's department, and Lao Feng would never give him military power.

Of course, the most awesome thing about Lao Feng was his traitorous temper. Not to mention that the Luanzhou Uprising was considered a revolution against the Manchu Qing Dynasty. When he took refuge with Yuan Shikai and was sent to Sichuan to suppress the Southwest Guards, this young man from Beiyang  The younger brigade commander actually flirted with Cai E and shook hands at the front line to make peace. He also sent a telegram to Luzhou asking Lao Yuan's Beijing government to cease the war and negotiate peace!

The result was that he was dismissed and retained. Although the 16th Mixed Brigade was still in his hands, it has since become a major pay arrears of the War Department. Cao Wu's Beiyang Third Division has full soldiers and full pay, and Lao Feng's 16th Mixed Brigade  The food and salary arrears are at least three months in arrears, and can be delayed for up to half a year!

Therefore, the 16th Mixed Brigade that was transferred to Langfang after returning from Sichuan was howling with hunger. Feng Yuxiang was even more incompatible with Xu Shuzheng, the deputy minister in charge of the Army Department. At the end of March, Lao Feng broke his face in front of Duan Qirui.  The complaint filed against Xu Shuzheng said that he had embezzled military funds and enriched his own pockets by borrowing money from Japan!

He also threatened to sue the Presidential Palace!  As soon as the wind blew in Xu Shuzheng's ears, Old Duan, who was worried about the dispute between the government and the court, was furious. He ordered Feng Yuxiang to be dismissed from the post of brigade commander and appointed him as the empty-headed patrol commander of Zhili South Road. How could Old Feng be willing to take up a free post?  Get a salary?  Definitely don't do it!

The army was Lao Feng's life. The mid-level and senior generals of the 16th Mixed Brigade sent messages to the Ministry of War, demanding that the troops be withdrawn. Otherwise, they would rather disband. Lao Duan and Xu Shuzheng were unwilling to bow their heads when they were assigned to this position, while threatening to mobilize troops.  During the chaos, Lu Jianzhang was found as a peacemaker to persuade the 16 mixed brigade members to accept their orders and not to fight against the central government!

As soon as Lu Jianzhang, as the old chief, took action, the matter was suppressed for the time being. Lao Feng angrily went to Tiantai Mountain to find a temple to live in, claiming that he would be self-sufficient in farming and not eat food from outside. The Sixteen Huncheng Brigade who stayed in Langfang  Then they live their lives haphazardly like children who have lost their souls and lost their father.

Langfang is actually a battleground for military strategists. It is right between Beijing and Tianjin. It is less than 100 miles away from Beijing in the northwest and about the same distance from Tianjin in the southeast. The Beijing-Shanxi Railway connects Beijing and Tianjin.  The Jin section passes through the city.

It was already 3 pm when Wang Geng and Xia Shan drove to the headquarters of the 16th Mixed Brigade in Langfang. Feng Yuxiang had only left the army in the morning. In the afternoon, Wang Geng, the new brigade commander who came by airborne, appeared in front of the 16th Mixed Brigade.  In front of the general, it came so quickly that no one expected it.

Different from being humble and low-key in front of Duan Qirui and Xu Shuzheng in Beijing, when Wang Geng, wearing a major general's woolen military uniform and a military uniform, appeared in the large conference room of the brigade headquarters, the cool and informal smile on his face was full of ambition for a senior general.  majesty and solemnity.

"Commander Wang is here! Stand at attention and salute.""Following the command of Qiu Bin, chief of staff of the brigade.

The officers of the 16th Composite Brigade, who were laughing and joking in the conference room, felt a slight thump in their hearts. All the officers couldn't help but stand at attention and salute. This shows that the well-trained 16th Composite Brigade is not in vain.

Wang Geng had his first meeting with the generals after taking office. He only summoned 16 mixed brigade and battalion officers and above. The lowest rank among the generals present was a major.

"All the officers of the battalion and above of the 16th Mixed Brigade are here, please give instructions to the brigade commander!" Chief of Staff Qiu Bin is Feng Yuxiang's classmate at the Northeast Military Academy. He is very senior and knows how to observe words and emotions.

This unheard-of West Point graduate was actually airborne as the brigade commander of the 16th Mixed Brigade as soon as he returned to China. This surprised everyone. Most generals thought, if the new brigade commander is just an ignorant kid, what will happen to us in the future?  Things will be easier to handle!

"Take a break, please sit down!" Wang Geng glanced around at the generals in front of him, pressed his hand down, and motioned to sit down.

"Brother Lan Jiang, you are in charge of the 16th mixed brigade officer school in Beijing. How come this new brigade commander has never heard of you?" Jiang Hongyu, who is tall and strong in the back row but is known as a wise man, lowered his voice and asked himself  Next to me is Liu Yufen, who has a square face and small eyes.

Jiang Hongyu graduated from the Baoding Army Crash Course and served as the brigade chief of staff when the 16th Brigade was established in September 1914. He has made countless contributions to Feng Yuxiang in the past three years.

Liu Yufen was Jiang Hongyu¡¯s classmate at the Baoding Army Crash Course. Jiang Hongyu and Liu Yufen were both instructors of the 16th Brigade Model Company. They were among the few military students in Feng¡¯s department who had experienced higher education in the Army.  The relationship between people is very good.

"I've never heard of him. I don't know where he came from. I only know that he is a top student at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point! I'm afraid Premier Duan is making a dangerous move!" Liu Yufen, who has a pig-kidney face and small eyes, whispered in a low voice.

Liu Yufen, who would later be known as one of Feng Yuxiang's five tiger generals, was not yet in his prime. Because of his experience in the Baoding Crash Academy and his familiarity with many of his classmates at the Army Ministry in Beijing, he was appointed by Feng Yuxiang to serve in Beijing.  The director of the division and the principal of the school for the children of the 16th Brigade in Beijing can also be regarded as Lao Feng's eyes and ears in Beijing.

Xia Shan stood upright behind Wang Geng, while Wang Geng left two capable guards outside the conference room door to guard the door. Without his order, no one was allowed to enter or leave without permission!

"When we meet for the first time, let me introduce myself first. Starting with me, my surname is Wang Geng, Wang Zhe, Wang Ye, Geng Zhe, and the seventh heavenly stem. It also caters to my return from studying in the West. My ancestral home is Wuxi, Jiangsu. I graduated from Tsinghua Academy in 1911 and was recommended to study in the United States.  , received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University in 1915, transferred to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in the same year, and graduated this summer! "

"Report to the brigade commander, please let me know if you have any questions!" A tall and lean colonel in his thirties stood up and said.

"First tell me your name and position, and then what else?" Wang Geng asked with a normal expression!

"Zhang Zhijiang, commander of the 2nd Infantry Regiment! Brigadier, didn't the Yankees' military academy say that you have to study for four years? How come the brigade commander can graduate in two years?"

Zhang Zhijiang has a bare head, has grown leaner, and his eyes are restrained. He looks very similar to the bald principal in his previous life in his youth.

"West Point is indeed supposed to graduate in four years, but West Point mainly recruits high school students, so I, a Princeton graduate, skipped two grades when I entered. And because of the European War, the third and fourth grades at West Point this year will  Graduate together!¡±

"Captain Zhang doesn't need to worry about my brigade commander's homework. I am the first Chinese student in the history of West Point to have ranked first in the class for two consecutive years in terms of comprehensive scores. I am also the first Chinese student in history to serve as the captain of the students!"

"Commander Zhang, do you have any questions?!" Wang Geng's voice was cold and expressionless.

"No more for now!" Zhang Zhijiang saluted and sat down.

This guy was as surprised as the other generals in Feng's department behind him. The tall and handsome young brigade commander in front of him actually ranked first in front of the Yankees. This made Feng's regiment and battalion commanders, most of whom had not received formal military education,  There was some discouragement.
