    ,

"Comrade Joseph is sitting in Tsaritsyn. Although the situation is difficult, I believe he can stabilize the front!" Ulyanov's face was serious, but he did not lose his position.

The Soviet Russian army in the Tsaritsyn area has about 10,000 infantry and cavalry and more than 120 artillery pieces. This force is composed of several scattered troops. The most powerful one was forced to retreat from Donbas to Charizin by the German occupying forces.  Several units of the 3rd and 5th Ukrainian armies in Rizin.

"On March 22, the Military Commission of the North Caucasus Military District was formally established, with Joseph as chairman and Voroshilov and Minin as committee members. Under their leadership, a lot of work was done to organize urban defense: several new divisions were formed  , established some workers¡¯ detachments and took measures to consolidate the rear.¡±

On March 24, the army in the Tsaritsyn area was divided into three areas (Ust-Medvedesky, Tsaritsyn and Salisk), a reserve team was established, and a field battle was established close to the city.  Fortifications: 2-3 bunkers, and barbed wire fences erected outside the ring railway branch line (via Gumlak, Voroponovo and Salipta, about 40 kilometers long), and the Volga River Fleet was mobilized to ensure  Tsaritsyn's defense.  "

The person pointing to the map next to the wall and explaining was Comrade Ulyanov¡¯s loyal comrade-in-arms, the 33-year-old Central Committee member Sverdlov!

Yakov Mikhailoch Sverdlov was born in 1885 - joined the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party in 1901 at the age of 16.  1905-07 Engaged in party leadership in the Urals.  He was imprisoned and exiled several times for 12 years.  He served as Central Committee Member since 1912.  He has led the Secretariat of the Central Committee since 1917, and was elected chairman of the All-Russia-China Executive Committee on November 8, 1917. At this time, he was also a military member of the Revolutionary Military Committee.

"I think it is necessary to form a second front army as soon as possible on the basis of the North Caucasus Military District. How about calling it the Southern Front?" Trotsky obviously had plans.

"I agree with Comrade Trotsky. Although the situation on the southern front is not as dangerous as the eastern front, we must not be careless. Krasnov and Denikin on the southern front have occupied the entire Don River, and there are Cossacks there.  Our hometown is very close to the North Caucasus and Ukraine, and the enemy has quite a lot of supporters in the local countryside, so we must not neglect it!¡±

Kamenev was the first to agree with Trotsky¡¯s suggestion, but he was thinking about it, why not go to the Southern Front and become the commander?

"Yes! I think it is obviously not enough for the Red Army to form only one unit of the Eastern Front. The Southern Front guards the southern gate of Moscow, and facing the enemies who have occupied Ukraine and the Caucasus, it must have a strong force! Trotsky  Comrade, have you considered the choice of commander of the Southern Front?¡±

Ulyanov obviously realized the seriousness of the situation and readily agreed to Trotsky's suggestion.

"This I still stick to my original point of view. In the process of forming the Red Army, we need a large number of professional military talents, that is, those generals in the Tsarist Russian army who firmly support the Soviets and the Bolsheviks. We cannot just because of the emergence of one or several  Rebels like Muravyov put all the nearly 30,000 middle- and high-level military talents in the Red Army into another book!"

Trotsky waved his arms to strengthen his tone while casting reproachful eyes on Dzerzhinsky.

In the process of purging counter-revolutionaries of the Eastern Front, there was an inevitable tendency to expand and implicate too much. Many of the non-Bolshevik generals who were executed did not actually follow Muraviov in the rebellion, but because they were from the old Tsarist Russian army at the same time  He did not join the Bolsheviks, and was wrongly killed and purged.

"Yeah, you are right, Comrade Trotsky, the policy of the Central Committee has not changed. The regular construction of the Red Army cannot be separated from military talents. The doors of the Soviets and Bolsheviks are always open to revolutionary generals who demand progress. Of course,  We will not show any mercy to the enemies hidden in the revolutionary ranks! Well, what are your thoughts on the candidate for the commander of the Southern Front? "

Comrade Ulyanov knew that Trotsky was angry at the Cheka's excessive purges in the Eastern Front. The Eastern Front was not so much defeated by Kolchak as it was defeated by Kolchak.  Muravyov lost his combat effectiveness due to the expansion of the suppression of counter-revolutionaries, and groups of troops followed non-Bolshevik generals to defect to Kolchak.

Nearly 150,000 White Guards have gathered under the banner of Kolchak here, while the Eastern Front has only more than 70,000 active forces left. If the troops are not organized to stabilize the front, Nizhny Novgorod, the most important  The military industrial base and the Eastern Front's base camp may not be able to be defended.

"I recommend Comrade Sergin as the commander of the Southern Front. He is a military expert and one of the first generals from Tsarist Russia to join the Bolsheviks. As for Comrade Voroshilov recommended by Joseph, he can be the commander of the group army below.  I'm doing some exercise,We must respect objective laws and put a regiment commander in the position of front army commander all of a sudden. That is not promoting him, that is ruining his career!  "

Trotsky knew that Comrade Joseph, who was far away in Tsaritsyn, did not take him seriously and did not report anything to him, the chairman of the Supreme Revolutionary Military Committee. Instead, he sent a telegram directly to Ulyanov and talked about it.  It was a small matter. On the Tsaritsyn front, comrades in the army said that Comrade Joseph knew nothing about military affairs, but he was always threatening senior generals in the army with shooting. So at this moment Trotsky spoke openly.

"Okay, okay! The Red Army wants to train its own generals, but it cannot shut out military experts. The commander of the Southern Front should appoint the Comrade Sergin you mentioned. I will explain it to Comrade Joseph! As for the  Voroshilov, he will still have opportunities in the future.¡±

While Ulyanov comforted Trotsky, he agreed to the candidates proposed by Trotsky.

In the next few days, the newly appointed Vacetis, accompanied by Trotsky, rushed to Nizhny Novgorod. While taking office as the commander of the Eastern Front, he organized two more workers' divisions to enrich the plan.  Khachevsky's 1st Army.

Speaking of the formation of the Soviet Red Army in its early days, it was a situation of huge numbers and titles but sparse personnel. Take the 1st Group Army of the Eastern Front rebuilt in early April 1918 as an example. This army consisted of Syzlan-Simbirsk.  It was formed as a volunteer force to fight against the counter-revolutionary Czechoslovak Army and the White Guards.

The First Army successively consisted of the Volsk Infantry Division, the 1st Turkestan Division, the 24th Simbirsk Iron Army Division, the 15th, 20th, 25th, 31st, and 49th Infantry Divisions, and the 1st and 49th Turkestan Cavalry Divisions.  The three divisions add up to eight divisions of infantry and two divisions of cavalry, but the actual number is 27,000 infantry and 3,000 cavalry.  On average, there are only 3,500 infantry divisions and 1,500 cavalry divisions.

In April 1918, the total number of troops of the 1st Group Army of the Eastern Front was only equivalent to one reorganized division of the Chinese Participating Army. As for the firepower, it was even worse. The entire group army had less than 100 artillery pieces combined, and the number of artillery shells was even higher.  It's very lacking.

Fortunately, the new Eastern Front Commander Vacetis is a lucky general. After taking office, he actually stabilized the situation on the Eastern Front and defended Nizhny Novgorod under the fierce attack of Kolchak's White Guards. Trotsky  The command train stopped at the train station to supervise the battle. The First Army and the Third Army jointly repelled the White Guards' attack and pushed the front back to Cheboksary.

The reason is not that the Eastern Front has been completely transformed, but that there is an internal problem on Kolchak's side.

To put it simply, with Kolchak's huge military victory in the Siberian Provisional Self-Government some time ago and the number of White Guards following him swelling to 150,000, the former Tsarist Russian admiral Shang Wang  The big bosses of the Socialist-Revolutionaries and Constitutionalists in the Siberian Provisional Government in Ufa formed a situation where they were the most powerful.

In early April 1918, the Provisional Self-Government of Siberia conspired to evacuate Kolchak's military power. This forced the former admiral to take a preemptive strike and sent troops directly from Kazan back to Ufa, where he launched a military coup to overthrow the Provisional Government of Ufa.  self-government.

On April 10, 1918, Kolchak declared himself as the Supreme Consul of Russia in Ufa and established a military government. Soon the generals of the White Guards in the Caucasus, Denikin and Yudenich, recognized his regime.  Wang Geng was more than half a year ahead of schedule in his previous life. Of course, the result of his retreat from the Kazan front line back to Ufa to stage a coup also gave Soviet Russia's Eastern Front a chance to breathe.

When Kolchak returned to Kazan from Ufa to prepare for organizing a new round of offensive in the direction of Moscow, it was the Eastern Front Army of the Soviet Red Army that was besieging the Kazan line. At this time, the combined number of the five Eastern Front armies was restored.  With the number reaching more than 100,000, and the artillery and machine guns having been strengthened, Kolchak's White Guards could not gain the upper hand for a while, and a stalemate formed on the Kazan front line.
