Volume 3 Far East Story Chapter 286 Gearing up for artillery battle

Previous page        Return to Catalog        Next page

At this time, the heavy machine gun battalion rushing in front had to change from a dense formation to a dispersed formation under the interception of artillery fire from the White Guards' second position. The rumbling carriages were constantly being torn apart by the opponent's intensive mountain artillery fire, with flesh and blood flying everywhere.

The mountain artillery of this era generally fired directly because of its low trajectory. Therefore, even if Lezhevsky's five heavy machine gun battalions accelerated the speed of the carriage, the three mountain artillery batteries of the White Guards on the second line of defense on the opposite side were 18  A 76mm caliber mountain gun still knocked out almost one-fifth of the Red Army's horse-drawn heavy machine guns in the 1,500-meter journey from 5 kilometers to 3 and a half kilometers.

Under the intensive and accurate artillery fire of the White Guards, the attacking Soviet Red Army horse-drawn heavy machine gun battalion was not a vegetarian. It gradually dispersed to both sides while running. It started with a one-kilometer line, and waited for the shooting to reach 2,500 meters.  When they were in position, the remaining less than a hundred carriages had been scattered across a three-kilometer-wide platoon. Even so, the density was as high as a Maxim heavy machine gun at 30 meters.

On the Western Front of the European War, when the Germans used 240 German version of the Maxim MG08 heavy machine gun to meet the British army with a frontal impact of 40 kilometers, it was only the firepower density of one 100-meter machine gun.

The horse-drawn machine guns that rushed to the firing position turned around, and nearly a hundred Russian 1910-caliber Maxims roared toward the White Guard positions on their respective carriages. Although the range of Maxim heavy machine guns imitated by various countries ranged from 2,200 meters to 3,500 meters.  It doesn¡¯t vary, but to effectively shoot a human-shaped target 2,200 meters away, it is much more difficult than threading a needle through the eye of a needle with your eyes closed, or in other words, you basically have to rely on blindness!

During the bloody battle at Lushun Fortress in the Russo-Japanese War, the Russian army placed the Japanese offensive troops within 250 meters before starting to fire!  The intensive firepower caused Nogi Nogi's meat-bomb charge to suffer a devastating blow.

The heavy machine gun's shooting at such a long distance basically relies on covering the surface of the opponent's position with firepower, or in other words, suppressing the opponent with rain of bullets. The reason why you can hit the target is not because of your accurate aim, but because of the rain of 600 bullets per minute.  Your bullets cover that area, and of course, they can be fired even beyond 2,200 meters.

Finally, Lezhevsky, who was commanding from the rear, blew the clarion call to withdraw troops. This 2,200-meter position happened to be the best direct shooting position for dealing with mountain artillery. In just a short while, the heavy machine gun battalion that stopped to fire was in vain.  The scattered bullets rained down on the front-line position of the White Guards on the opposite side. It was impossible to see the great results of the battle, because the position looked empty, and the opponent's 76mm mountain cannon was obviously hiding behind the shield like a turkey.  He was also aiming at himself with the horse-drawn machine gun and beating him indiscriminately.

My own heavy machine gun battalion has not yet knocked out half of the ammunition belts. Under the attack of the opponent's mountain artillery, a dozen more fearless horse-drawn machine guns were beaten to pieces by the opponent, and their flesh and blood flew everywhere!

"Comrade Commander! The heavy machine gun losses are too great! Hurry up and withdraw!!" The political commissar of the group army next to Lezhevsky couldn't help stamping his feet and shouting!

The melodious sound of the bugle sounded from the position of the Fourth Army of the Soviet Eastern Front. The remaining three multiple machine gun battalions were running back and spreading further apart. At the same time, the machine gunners were still persistently and intermittently moving toward the rear of the White Guards position.  The rain of bullets was pouring out, and as the carriages became more and more scattered, in addition to the two carriages that were scattered on the way back in a panic, the remaining more than 90 heavy machine guns finally ran back to the starting position, and the people and horses were all  Drenched in sweat and out of breath.

Behind you are the whistles and urrahs on the White Guards' position!  Sergei Mikhainovich, the chief of staff of the White Guards who was in charge of commanding on the high ground, put down the telescope in his hand, turned to the adjutant beside him and said, "Inform the division commander that the enemy has retreated, but the Maxim shot was like a splash."  It's like rain, but there is no chance of pursuit as the division commander hoped for, so we have to wait for the opponent's next attack!"

Before the staff officer could get the phone, the phone on the front line rang first. Seeing that it was a straight line connecting to the mysterious commander-in-chief of the battle, Sergey went up and answered the phone before the staff officer could wait.

"I am Chief of Staff Sergey. The division commander is leading the cavalry brigade behind the high ground, ready to take advantage of others Yes I didn't get it this time When the opponent's horse-drawn machine gun retreated, its muzzle happened to be pointed backwards.  . . . It¡¯s really a target for the enemy. . . .

Sergey's face was flushed and excited. The voice of the Chinese king, the commander-in-chief of the coalition forces whom he had just met at the Ufa Church Battle headquarters before the war, came from the receiver. Unexpectedly, the Chinese commander-in-chief spoke in Russian.  His Chinese is much better than my own three-legged cat.

Of course, at this moment, Sergei has long forgotten the glorious war history of being chased by an armored brigade in Ulan-Ude in early March. To use the words of the commander-in-chief of the coalition forces, Wang Zhong, everyone is now a comrade and comrade-in-arms. In the past,  All is history, only the present and the future are meaningful.

"Mountain artillery, don't worry, there will be one sooner or later! Sergey, your staff officer?Artillery - used well, but be careful of the opponent's artillery fire. According to reconnaissance, the Fourth Army in front of you only has 50,000 troops and 10 artillery companies. You only have six artillery companies. The fight may be more difficult tomorrow.  Be flexible and timely adjust gun positions!  "Wang Geng said with a smile on the other end of the phone.

The voice of Chief of Staff Sergei came from the receiver: "Your Excellency, Commander-in-Chief, our division commander is here. He has something to tell you!"

Then a gasping voice came from the receiver, and it sounded like the voice of the cavalry division commander and the former enemy commander of the Southeast Group, Alexander Petrovich:

"Your Excellency, Commander-in-Chief, I have an idea. The Soviet Red Army on the opposite side came all the way and suffered a big loss today. I plan to lead a cavalry brigade for a sneak attack at night. Do you approve it?" Petrovich asked the young Chinese  The king did not dare to be negligent at all. I heard that the Chinese king seemed to be smiling and harmonious, but he was very strict in running the army. The children in the east of the Ural Mountains did not dare to cry when they heard his name. His soldiers started to shoot their own soldiers.  Soldiers who violate military orders are no softer than those who eliminate guerrillas and saboteurs.

In the words Pepelyaev quietly reminded himself, the commander-in-chief of the coalition forces is the king of the entire Ural Mountains and the Western Siberian Plain. Don't look at the majestic and solemn appearance of the consul Kolchak in front of us.  When you get in front of this young Chinese king, you have to nod, bow, and smile.

Alexander Petrovich drank heavily from the cold water handed to him by the orderly Turkin, while waiting for the reply from the commander-in-chief of the battle, the King of China, in the receiver. In front of him was the Soviet Fourth Army, which had only 50,000 people.  With 40,000 troops and three lines of defense, Petrovich was a bit unsatisfied.

In his opinion, the Fourth Army of the Soviet Red Army was his old enemy. They used three divisions to sneak attack the Cossack Cavalry Division that surrounded him in Orenburg. Fortunately, Chief of Staff Sergei was alert and the team escaped.  But all the money and wealth he had saved in the past few months were lost. If he hadn't gone to Ufa to get supplements from the All-Russian Provisional Government, and was reused by the Prime Minister of the Cabinet, his reputation would have been overshadowed by the fourth in Soviet Russia.  The army group lost face!

"Hmm, be on guard, don't attack the other side, and prevent the other side from sneaking up on us in the middle of the nightYesYesWhat? Okay! Great! Now tomorrow Sergey, the chief of staff, who is an artilleryman, will  It's useful. Yes. It won't happen with me.  Got it all!"

Alexander Petrovitch¡¯s eyes were filled with excitement, he put down the phone, turned around and punched his chief of staff Sergey on the shoulder and shouted,

"Old man, the Chinese king praised us for our beautiful fighting, saying that you are an excellent battlefield commander, especially the artillery. He promised to add a Japanese field artillery unit to our direction tomorrow and put it under our direct command.  !¡±

"Field Artillery Regiment?! The Japanese Army's Field Artillery Regiment has 36 75mm mountain guns and 18 75mm field guns. This is 54 cannons, equivalent to 9 artillery batteries! Now it is developed, let's see.  Wait until tomorrow to see how this artillery genius, Sergei Mikhainovich, can show off!"

"Old man! It seems that the Commander-in-Chief is afraid that we will suffer a loss in the artillery fire tomorrow. We only have six artillery companies, and the opponent has at least ten artillery companies!" This is the first time Alexander Petrovich has been so confident.  In the battle, whatever comes to mind is what comes.

"I'm afraid there are more than ten. I suffered a loss this afternoon. Maybe tomorrow the Fourth Army across from me will strengthen its artillery batteries from other armies. I heard that the Eastern Front Army across from me has a total of 33 artillery batteries in the Southern Group!  "Chief of Staff Sergei Mikhainovich's mind was spinning very quickly, but he just didn't understand why the coalition forces bothered to engage in artillery battles with the other side since they had such a powerful air force.
