"Well, that's it, pass on my order. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Kazan Infantry Divisions are responsible for the defense line within 15 kilometers of the Chivelisk front line. They will surround me south of Chivelisk. 20 artillery batteries will form three  A cluster was arranged to establish artillery positions 5 kilometers southwest, south and southeast of Chivelisk. When the artillery was ready, we launched a sudden fire attack. Trains in the direction of Kazan gave priority to transporting artillery shells. The road protection troops along the way must ensure the safety of the railway line!  "

Kolchak issued a series of orders, and the combat staff hurriedly memorized them. Here, Chief of Staff Hastings added, "Ask the cavalry brigade of the 3rd Don Division to send one cavalry regiment each to the direction of Chivelisk.  Feint and attract the opponent's armored train to Chivelisk. In addition, the two artillery groups in the southwest and southeast should not open fire until they are ready, and wait for orders from the headquarters!"

"Alexander Vasilyevich, when the attack between us becomes fierce, the other side will definitely call for the support of armored trains. At that time, we will fire three artillery groups at the same time and beat the opponent's armored trains to pieces. There will be no armored trains on board.  With the fire support of artillery and machine guns, let¡¯s see how Berzin can hold Chivelisk!¡± Hastings said with a smile.

"In this case, let's simply withdraw all the cavalry brigades, and let's make a posture of concentrating our forces to attack Qivelisk, so that the other side doesn't have to worry about us detouring on the flanks, and can boldly concentrate the armored trains to Qivelisk!"  Kolchak clearly thought further than Hastings this time.

"In this case, the West Route Army and the Central Route Army must strengthen their concealment. If the troops of Cheboksary and Alexandrovna can also be mobilized to the direction of Chivelisk, then we will adopt a three-pronged approach.  , captured Cheboksary and Alexandrovna in one fell swoop, encircled and annihilated the Third Army of Berzin. I don¡¯t see how they can defend Novgorod just by relying on the replenished Fifth Army!  "Hastings' eyes lit up and he added!

At 10:00 on July 23, 1918, fifteen kilometers northwest of Chivelisk, the former enemy headquarters of the Soviet Third Army

"Report, the main force of Kolchak's White Guards launched a third attack on Chivelisk. The opponent's artillery fire was very fierce. There were at least 7 artillery batteries on the artillery position. The first brigade of the first division guarding the core position of the station has suffered casualties.  More than one-third of the three artillery companies behind the position were defeated. Only one company was left. The White Guards invested an entire division in this attack! The first regiment of the second brigade of the first division had already gone up.  Division commander Qupov requested the group army to provide reinforcements from both wings!" a headquarters combat staff officer put down the phone and reported.

"The enemy is storming Chivelisk. What kind of strategy is this? Chief of Staff, the report from the 2nd Division and the 4th Division just now said that the enemy's cavalry brigades in front of them have all moved in the direction of Chivelisk?" Berzin looked at himself suspiciously.  Chief of Staff Merzheninov asked, obviously smelling something unusual from Kolchak's movements.

"We can't be fooled easily. The 1st Division named Chubov must hold on. It is absolutely impossible for Kolchak to break through the 1st Division's position with only one division! The 1st Division must calm down!" Merzheninov  Like Berzin, he didn't believe that Kolchak's style of play was so upright, so he just focused on the core position and salient of Chivelisk and attacked wildly?

"Chief of Staff, Commander Qupov of the 1st Division wants to speak to you in person!" The combat staff officer wanted to talk on the phone. Without saying a few words, a series of roars apparently came from the receiver, which frightened the guy and hurriedly raised the phone to shout at Mei.  Zheninov said.

"I am the chief of staff, yes, Mezheninov, I say, comrade division commander, stay calm. You have one division, and the enemy has only one division. The Chivelisk side is easy to defend and difficult to attack. He can't attack you with just one division.  Position, I am absolutely sure, the 1st Division is our ace unit!" Merzheninov shouted into the microphone unmoved.

"Chief of Staff, the three artillery companies are almost finished. The other side has at least 40 cannons pounding my defense line. You can hear the shells raining down. The casualties of the first brigade are almost over 2,000. The two regiment commanders  One was seriously injured and the other was killed. The division political commissar **wa led the first regiment of the second brigade to attack. If we continue to be bombarded like this, my team will collapse. I said to the chief of staff, quickly transfer the armored trains on both wings for fire reinforcements.  Well, otherwise I really can't hold on!" The hoarse and anxious voice of Chubov, commander of the 1st Ural Infantry Division, came from the receiver.

Army commander Berzin snatched the phone from Merzheninov¡¯s hand and said seriously into the phone,

"Don't stress the difficulty to me. You have one division to defend a five-kilometer position. The 2nd Infantry Division and the 4th Infantry Division each have to defend a position of fifteen kilometers. Without the fire support of the armored train, the enemy can attack with any cavalry brigade.  The position has collapsed. You must hold on, comrade division commander, or else I will personally bring the armored train from the Army Headquarters to reinforce you?"

"Hey, are you kidding, Ka???.Ivanovich, you are the commander of the group army and command the entire iron triangle defense battle. How about sending an armored train from the second division's defense line to reinforce, repel the enemy's attack and then withdraw?  ?  "Mezheninov became anxious and came up with an idea.

"Okay! Chupov, the 2nd Division's defense line will send an armored train to support your battle. After repelling the enemy's attack, the armored train must be withdrawn quickly, that's it!" Berzin hung up the phone after saying this.  !

? July 23, 1918 10:00 Headquarters of the 1st Ural Infantry Division of the Soviet Red Army in Chivelisk

"Reporting to the division commander, Commander of the 1st Brigade Kang Bozhule reported that the position of the 1st Regiment of the 1st Brigade on the right wing was breached by the enemy, and the enemies came up! The commander and political commissar of the 1st Regiment were killed successively, and the director of the Political Department of the 1st Brigade led the brigade guards in a continuous attack  Going up to fill the gap! The first brigade requested the division headquarters to send reinforcements!" The division commander Qupov reported anxiously while holding the phone in one hand!

D'Artagnan Gregorianovich Chupov was a native of Perm. He participated in the Russo-Japanese War as a sergeant in Tsarist Russia. He joined the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party in 1905 and also participated in the 1905-1907 revolution. In 1907, he was involved in the underground  He was sentenced to 5 years of hard labor by the Tsarist government for his activities. He was released in 1908 and arrested again in 1910. When he was exiled to Irkutsk, he met Berzin, the commander of the Third Army who was also exiled there.

After the start of the European War in 1914, Chubov was drafted into the army again. He fought bravely in the Russian army. After the October Revolution, he followed Berzin to work in Petrograd and Moscow. After the drastic changes in January 1918, he served as Berzin's comrade-in-arms.  He returned to his hometown to organize guerrillas and the local Soviet, and later became the division commander of the 1st Ural Division when the Soviet Red Army established the Third Army.

"Why didn't the artillery fire? Quickly call the artillery position and order the artillery company to bombard 200 meters south of the enemy's breakthrough in the enemy's defense line of the 1st Brigade and 1st Regiment on the right wing. Get all the shells out!" Chubov said at the lookout window.  Using a telescope to observe the position of the first regiment of the right-wing first brigade 1,500 meters away, he shouted without looking back.

"The artillery position phone call is blocked!" the combat staff reported with a sweaty face.
