Kalitintsev's 4th Brigade of the 2nd Volunteer Division was originally the unit with the most recruits among the two Kharkiv volunteer infantry divisions. This group of former Kharkiv citizens and urban and rural refugees joined the Ukrainian Volunteer Division.  It has not officially fought a major battle since then. This is also the first time that the 4th Infantry Brigade has been baptized by the opponent's artillery fire on the position.  §êw§ë

Although the air raids launched by the coalition aviation forces against Kharkov yesterday afternoon and this morning were fierce, after the air raid warning was issued, most of the defenders hid in the city and the shelters near the second line of defense near the city wall.  For the 4th Infantry Brigade, this is the first time they have braved enemy artillery fire to defend their positions. Every shell that falls into the trench and explodes may kill the comrades around them and themselves. Although the fortifications are relatively strong, there are always dangers.  The blind artillery shells fell on the crowd of Ukrainian volunteers who had no eyes and failed to take cover in time, and exploded with blood and flesh everywhere.

In fact, about a brigade of the Japanese offensive force just shouted and showed its head at the edge of the forest on the other side of the Kharkov River. Waiting for the two main battalions of the 4th Brigade of the 2nd Division of Ukrainian Volunteers here to panic  After Zhang entered the position with full firepower, the opponents all retreated into the forest with a roar.

Von Neuhaus, who was in the command post at the east gate of the rear fortress, felt his heart sinking. Next to him, Karitintsev and the staff of the 2nd Volunteer Division headquarters shouted "Ula" to celebrate the first victory of repelling the Japanese Japs.  As for the wave fortifications, the Japanese artillery fire that had stopped for a few minutes was coming from the forest again. This time the artillery fire was much denser than before. It was obviously the Chinese-made M81 mortar with a range of 2 kilometers.  After this round of shelling, the raindrop-like shells blasted the Ukrainian defenders in the fortifications on both sides of the Hexi bridgehead position, turning their horses upside down and bleeding into rivers.

This group of volunteers who had not yet recovered from shouting "Ula" tasted the power of the enemy's coordinated infantry and artillery attack for the first time. Feeling that the enemy's infantry brigade was launching a feint attack just to attract the defenders here to enter the position.  , as a result, the two infantry battalions of the 7th Regiment of the 4th Ukrainian Volunteer Brigade, which had only suffered casualties in the 15-minute shelling, suffered more than 100 casualties in just 3 minutes due to this round of coalition shelling.  , once again lost three 76cm mortar groups and two mg08 heavy machine guns.

Of course, the Ukrainian defenders who had suffered a loss scurried back into the bomb shelters and shelters again. Since the two bridgeheads had collapsed top floors to block the shells, they did not suffer much damage this time. Unfortunately, they were close to the bridgeheads.  The machine gun fortifications on both flanks were finally destroyed by the dense coalition artillery shells.

"Wellthe Japanese are too cunningthis is badthe machine gun firepower of our bridgehead can only knock down a dozen or twenty Japanese soldiers at most, and the other side's shelling cost us at least ten times the enemy's casualtiesGeneral  Your Excellency, we are too passive without the support of the artillery We can't use our lives to fill the opponent's guns like this, right? Should we bring the artillerymen in the city up to teach the opponent a lesson?" Commander of the 2nd Volunteer Division?  Karitintsev saw sweat on his forehead, and after circling around in confusion, he said to Major General von Neuhaus, the Supreme Emperor, who came to supervise the battle and actually commanded the East City defense line.

"I told you not to expose the target without an order. Who told your people to rush into the position in such a hurry? The Japanese infantry brigade is clearly feigning an attack. Why are your people so anxious to go to the position and die? They deserve to be the enemy's cannon fodder!" Germany!  The major general cursed angrily, but frowned. He could see clearly from the telescope just now that the damage caused by the opponent's field artillery position 5 kilometers to the east to the Ukrainian defenders was far less than that 2 kilometers away.  The M81 mortar ambushed in the forest at a certain distance poses a great threat to the personnel on its own position.

"Report to the general, according to the statistics from the artillery observation post just now, the artillery position arranged by the Japanese in the forest is 5,500 meters away from our position. It should be two Japanese field artillery brigades arranged along the open space on both sides of the Kharkiv Forest Road. A total of  There are 16 75mm mountain guns, and the mortars that just fired at our position from the forest belong to the coalition¡¯s Chinese-made M81 mortar group. This number and threat are relatively large!¡±

A German staff captain came in hurriedly and reported. Von Neuhaus turned around and asked, "Can you tell how many M81 mortars fired at us in the forest just now?"

"Your Excellency General, the opponent's mortars are very dense, and the shots are precise and short. We have not been able to verify the exact number of the opponent's mortars from several observation posts placed on the city wall. However, according to preliminary statistics, with the Kharkov Bridge as the  On the 2-kilometer front line in the center, there should be at least 30 coalition M81 mortars deployed in the forest opposite! There are almost 4 M81 mortar groups hiding in the forest, about 1,500 meters away from our first position.  Position" reported the German staff officer with the rank of captain on his shoulder.

"The artillery observation team continues to observe and report at any time! The discovered position must be reported to our artillery unit in the city as soon as possible! But without my order, no field artillery and howitzer units are allowed to counterattack or fire except mortars.  ! "FengNeuhaus waved away the German captain. Kalitintsev, commander of the 2nd Volunteer Division, heard this and his eyes lit up, and he couldn't help but said,

"General, are you planning to strike later? So what are you waiting for? Hurry up and bring our artillery battalion up. The opponent's artillery position is to the east of the forest, only 6 kilometers away from the wall of our fortress. The range is completely  If we can reach the opponent, the blood of my troops cannot flow in vain. We must give the opponent's artillery a lesson unexpectedly!"

"Be calm, Vladislav Vermilovich, the Japanese are using feints to attract us to expose our firepower. The purpose is to use artillery to kill and destroy our firepower points. In addition to being concealed, your troops are still concealed.  Before the enemy's ground troops actually commit to the attack, don't rush into the trenches at every turn"

The German Major General warned Kalitintsev, who was a little confused, and thought to himself. The one crossing the river was the Japanese 23rd Infantry Brigade. The opponent's artillery configuration seemed to be two 75mm field artillery brigades and four M81 mortar squads.  , to say that the artillery in the city suddenly opened fire has a high chance of causing heavy damage to the enemy through preemptive strikes. However, once our artillery layout is exposed, the opponent's counterattack will not be polite, and the second wave of air strikes by the Allied Air Force  Will appear at any time
