One of the Demon Guardians - Xu Zhimo

Xu Zhimo (1897-1931), whose original name was Zhang Qu and whose courtesy name was Qiansen, later changed to Zhimo, was from Haining, Zhejiang Province. He was a famous modern Chinese Crescent poet and essayist, and was also the cousin of the famous novelist Jin Yong.

Xu Zhimo was born in a wealthy family and studied in the UK.  His lifelong pursuit of love, freedom and beauty (Hu Shi's words) brought him a lot of creative inspiration, but also ruined his life.  Xu Zhimo advocated new poetry rhythm and made important contributions to the development of Chinese new poetry.

Xu Zhimo was born into a wealthy family in Haining, Zhejiang. His father Xu Shenru owned a power plant, a plum sauce factory, a silk shop, and a small bank in Shanghai. He was also the president of the Xiashi Chamber of Commerce and was known as the Xiashi Giant.

When Xu Zhimo was 18, his parents arranged to marry 15-year-old Zhang Youyi, and then went to the West to study.  For Xu Zhimo, this marriage was not a happy one.

After Zhang Youyi traveled across the ocean to England, she discovered that Xu Zhimo had met Lin Changmin's daughter Lin Huiyin (formerly known as Lin Huiyin) during her stay in England.  Later Zhang Youyi and Xu Zhimo divorced.  In the end, Lin Huiyin chose Liang Sicheng, the son of Liang Qichao.

In 1923, Liang Qichao (named Ren Gong) wrote a long letter to advise him sincerely: Never let other people's pain interfere with your own happiness.  Whether my actions will affect my future happiness or not is as unclear as catching the wind, but it has already caused immeasurable pain to many people.

The sacredness of love is popular among today¡¯s young people.  This is a matter that can only be met but cannot be sought.  In the case of a sentimental person, his illusions will rise and fall suddenly, and it is extremely difficult to be satisfied or contented.  The sacred realm you dream of may not be attainable, and you will end up with troubles all your life.

Ren Gong said again: Woohoo!  Shima!  How can there be a perfect universe in the world?  You should know that we all have an attitude towards life that does not seek perfection, so that we can appreciate the wonderful flavor of life.  If you indulge in a dream that is impossible to obtain, you will be frustrated several times.  The anger is over.  Yu Yi and Tuo Yi wanted to die, and their death was nameless.  Death is still possible, but the most terrifying thing is that of immortality and degeneration to the point of being unable to extricate oneself.  Alas!  Shima!  Don¡¯t be afraid!  Don¡¯t be afraid!

Zhimo replied to Ren Gong's letter and refused to admit that he was exchanging other people's pain for his own happiness.  He wrote back and said: I am willing to risk the world and fight with all my strength, not specifically to avoid the cruel pain, but actually to settle my conscience and establish my personality.  Seek salvation for your soul.

Who doesn¡¯t seek virtue?  Who is restless?  Who is not afraid of hardships?  However, if there are those who break out of the encirclement, how can I have no choice but to do so?  I will visit my only soul mate in the vast sea of ??people.  If I get it, I'm lucky; if I don't get it, it's my fate.  that is it.

Sorry, my master!  I taste the essence of my soul to condense it into an ideal pearl.  Containing it with my passionate efforts, it illuminates my profound spiritual house.  But the vulgar and jealous of it often want to numb its soul, crush its ideals, kill its hopes, and stain its purity!  I will not flow into decadence, into mediocrity.  The amount of defilement that flows into it is only a small amount!

Xu Zhimo returned to Peiping after studying abroad and often got together with his friend Wang Geng.  Wang Geng's wife Lu Xiaoman had a great influence on Xu Zhimo.  Lu Xiaoman is smart and lively.  She is an only child. Her father, Lu Bao, was once a prot¨¦g¨¦ of the famous Japanese Prime Minister Ito Hirobumi. After returning to China, he served as the Taxation Department.

Xu Zhimo and Lu Xiaoman met and fell in love in the social scene of Peking and talked about getting married.  Xu's father insisted on asking Liang Qichao to witness the marriage.  Xu Zhimo turned to Hu Shi for help, and Hu Shi invited Liang Rengong out.  Liang Rengong scolded Xu Zhimo in public: Xu Zhimo, you have an impetuous temperament, so you have no achievements in knowledge. You are not good at using emotions, so you divorce and remarry. In the future, you must change your past mistakes and remarry.  Be a new person.  After the grand ceremony, Xu Zhimo and Lu Xiaoman went south to settle in Shanghai.

Because Xu Zhimo divorced and remarried, his father was offended and his financial assistance was cut off. Lu Xiaoman lived a lavish life, living in a three-story luxury residence with a monthly rent of 100 silver dollars. There were many servants at home, including drivers,  Chefs, valets, and personal maids, these huge expenses made Xu Zhimo unable to make ends meet.

At the invitation of Hu Shi, Xu Zhimo taught concurrently at Peking University. In order to supplement his family income, he often traveled between Shanghai, Nanjing, and Beijing. At the same time, he lectured at Guanghua University, Soochow University Law School, and Daxia University.  Rush to write poems and essays to earn royalties.

Lu Xiaoman, who is addicted to nightlife such as dancing, playing cards, and boxing shows, goes to bed at dawn every day and sleeps until two o'clock in the afternoon.

On November 19, 1931, because Lin Huiyin was going to give a lecture on Chinese architectural art to foreign envoys at the Peking Union Auditorium, Xu Zhimo wanted to go and support him, so he took the China Airlines Jinan postal flight north from Nanjing at 8:00 in the morning.  Xu Zhimo accidentally hit the Kaishan Mountain in Jinan and fell in the fog. He was killed at the age of 34.
