    In 1953, he married Qi Yongpei and had two sons (Guo Bencheng and Guo Benyuan).  In the 1950s, he became a member of the China Literary and Art Association.

    In 1954, he served in the National Salvation Corps; Bo Yang only started writing novels after serving in the National Salvation Corps, and his novels are quite realistic and critical.  In 1959, he divorced Qi Yongpei, married Ni Minghua, and had a daughter, Jiajia (Guo Benming).

    Since May 1960, he has worked as a columnist for "Yimeng Gossip" in the "Zili Evening News" under the pen name Bo Yang. The essays he writes are very critical of the current situation.

    Beginning in 1961, "Foreign Land", published under the pseudonym Deng Kebao in the Zili Evening News, used reporting techniques to describe a loyal army of the Republic of China who was ordered to retreat to the Yunnan-Myanmar-Thailand border area, fighting against fate and hoping to counterattack the mainland.  Deeds.

    In 1967, when Bo Yang took over as editor-in-chief of the family edition of China Daily, the edition published the American comic strip "Popeye" five days a week.

    In January 1968, Bo Yang was unhappy because the translation of "Popeye" mentioned that Popeye sent his father and son to live on a fertile island. The two of them wanted to run for president and write campaign documents.     In 1972, he was sent to the Green Island Correctional Training Prison of the Ministry of National Defense along with other political prisoners in Taipei.  In 1975, due to the death of Chiang Kai-shek, the sentence was reduced by one-third to eight years in prison.

    After serving his sentence in 1976, he was still detained in Green Island.  He was later released at the request of Amnesty International and other human rights groups, and was imprisoned for a total of nine years and 26 days.

    In prison, Bo Yang completed three manuscripts: "Outline of Chinese History", "Genealogical Records of Chinese Emperors, Queens, Princes and Princesses", and "Chronology of Chinese History".  There was originally a fourth volume, "The Official System of China Through the Ages," but only half of it was written because the reference book was confiscated by officials for safekeeping in 1975.

    In 1978, he married Ms. Zhang Xianghua, a poet who later taught at Beiyi Nu.  After being released from prison, Bo Yang devoted himself to writing, which he started in 1983.  He began to translate and write "Bo Yang's Edition of Zizhi Tongjian", which was published in installments through overall planning. By 1993, all 72 volumes were completed.

    In 1985, "The Ugly Chinese" was published, which criticized and discussed the shortcomings of Chinese collective culture and character, triggering heated debates in Chinese societies around the world. In the autumn of 1986, a poplar craze broke out in mainland China.  Soon, the student movement broke out in China, and the Communist Party became angry. In 1987, Bo Yang suddenly became a criminal.  All of his works were completely banned in mainland China until 2004 when they were officially re-authorized for publication.

    Bo Yang also actively promoted related human rights affairs and served as the founding president of the Taiwan branch of Amnesty International in 1994.

    Since heart surgery in 1994, followed by a series of serious illnesses.  Bai Yang's health deteriorated.  On May 20, 2000, he was appointed as a national policy adviser by the Communist Party of China.

    September 2006, due to age and health reasons.  Announced that he would no longer appear in public or accept interviews.  The preface to the new mainland edition of "Bo Yang Yue" published in the same month became his final work.

    In 2006, Bo Yang agreed to donate 56 boxes with a total of 11,745 documents and cultural relics to the China Museum of Modern Art. On February 6, 2007, a press conference was held to officially hand over the documents and cultural relics donated by Bo Yang to the collection.

    In addition, Bo Yang was also the first honorary doctorate from National Tainan University. The NTU Bo Yang Museum of Art was opened on June 27, 2007 and was donated to the school on March 31.  Including important certificates after arriving in Taiwan in 1949, marriage certificates, manuscripts of Zhizhi Tongjian, proofreading manuscripts, essay manuscripts, etc., which is equivalent to the collection in Beijing.

    Bai Yang was admitted to the hospital due to pneumonia and respiratory failure on February 24, 2008. He died at 1:12 a.m. on April 29, 2008 at Gengshin Hospital in Xindian, Taiwan, at the age of 88.

    On May 17, 2008, in accordance with his last wish, he was buried at sea. His family scattered Bo Yang's ashes into the waters of Green Island, and left some of the ashes to be brought back to mainland China for burial. After the efforts of his widow Zhang Xianghua, some of Bo Yang's ashes were buried in September 2010.  He was buried in Fushouyuan Cemetery in his hometown of Xinzheng, Henan Province on the 12th.

    Zhang Xianghua, Bo Yang's wife, said that her husband's novels were terrible and thought that his essays were better than novels. However, "Outline of Chinese History" and "Bo Yang's Edition of Tongjian Chronicles" were very good because they were very groundbreaking and used a unique style.  Completely different from essays.

    Chen Jiangong, director of the Museum of Modern China, commented that Bo Yang is a miracle in contemporary history.

    Writer Nie Hualing once commented that Bo Yang's novels and essays have one thing in common: deep love and affection hidden in the cynicism.
